There is a consensus that an individual person has only one instance of (P31) value: human (Q5). While in common parlance we say a person is a politician, female, Norwegian, Muslim, etc., all of these should be expressed by properties such as occupation (P106), sex or gender (P21), country of citizenship (P27), religion or worldview (P140), etc.

As of June 2018, this area probably needs improvement in its standards. ArthurPSmith remarks, "I think what's done right now regarding awards is pretty inconsistent/arbitrary. For example Fritz London Award (Q246592) (along with many other cases like this) is both a subclass of and an instance of award! IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award (Q5970360) is a direct subclass of award, but also an instance of a subclass of award, which is also stated to be a metaclass, so that's odd. The value type constraint on award received (P166) allows the value to be an "instance or a subclass". So it would be nice to pick a consistent way to do this that makes sense across all of these cases." If anyone is interested in sorting this out, you might try working with Wikidata:WikiProject Award.

Mass-produced items

• Products generally belong to a product model (Q17444171). An item like Nokia 3310 (Q219691) represents a product model. It's a subclass of mobile phone (Q17517); the individual phones would be instances, but unless they are museum exhibits they aren't likely to have their own items in Wikidata. The item is an instance of cell phone model (Q19723444), which is a subclass of product model (Q17444171). (The item cell phone model (Q19723444) is redundant, since we could use product model (Q17444171) directly and it would be apparent from the subclass that it's a mobile phone model.)
• Products are often grouped into product lines / series / families. E.g., the Samsung Galaxy S6 (Q18941713) is a member of Samsung Galaxy S series (Q73389), which represents some related phone models. The family item is an instance of mobile phone series (Q20488450) which is a subclass of model series (Q811701). The model is connected to its family with a part of the series (P179) statement. In this case there are nested product families, and we also have Samsung Galaxy S series (Q73389) part of the series (P179) Samsung Galaxy (Q493064).
• Product life cycle: common occurrences are announcement date (P6949), when a product is officially announced or added to a catalogue or website, date of commercialization (P5204) when its available for sale (shipping date), and discontinued date (P2669) when it's removed from sale.
• Identification of companies and brands: brand (P1716), developer (P178), and manufacturer (P176). In the modern economy, these values can all be different.
