Wikidata:WikiProject PCC Wikidata Pilot/Illinois State University

Aim and Scope

edit

The Illinois State University PCC Wikidata Pilot Project will create Name Authority Records (NARs) and Wikidata items for performers (with a focus on performers from underrepresented and marginalized groups) from circus route books digitized as part of a 4 year CLIR grant. NARs and Wikidata items for some circuses will be created where it will benefit disambiguation or they are judged significant.

Background

edit

This project is the culmination of a $268,139 Digitizing Hidden Collections CLIR Grant received by Milner Library Special Collections at Illinois State University, the Robert L. Parkinson Library & Research Center at Circus World Museum, and The Ringling Archives. The project initially created high quality scans of over 300 circus route books and included keyword searching capability.

This portion of the project will undertake disambiguation of circus performer names and create Library of Congress Name Authority Records (NAR) for the names. The scope includes the most cited performer names and those of notability in the collection. Our attention will also concentrate on performers from historically underrepresented and marginalized groups. We will also contribute these performer names to Wikidata.

Workflow

edit

Bibliographic records for digitized route books will be created, and Name Authority Records created based on those records.

Project Assistants will perform research to establish and disambiguate personal and corporate identities, and create NARs and Wikidata items describing performers.

LCCN numbers will be included in Wikidata items, and when approved for use the MARC 024 field will be included in NARs to create 5-star linked data.
