Help with RE disambiguation links edit

Notified participants of WikiProject Antiquity Hi all, on de.wikisource we are compiling lists of RE articles that link to Wikipedia/Wikidata disambiguation pages: s:de:RE:Wartung:Tote Links nach Wikipedia. I would like for all of those links to link to matching items instead. In some cases, this requires finding the right Wikidata item, in some, it might require to create new items. The links then have to be changed on the RE items on Wikidata and deleted on Wikisource. Would y'all like to help with this work? It's a bit too much for me alone. Best, --Tolanor (talk) 09:44, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

This SPARQL query will also give every RE article whose main subject is a disambig page: https://w.wiki/78aq --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 11:44, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
I have only read rights see for example [1]. --Falten-Jura (talk) 14:11, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
On Wikidata? No, you should be able to edit. The edit buttons are linked throughout the article, not on the top as on Wikipedia. --Tolanor (talk) 14:18, 27 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Tolanor maybe you would be interested in this proposal here, we are trying in general to improve the coverage of disambiguation pages and identical names. For that, we need a better updated project.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:55, 30 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

We are going to take care of this, see Wikidata:WikiProject Antiquity/Pauly-Wissowa. Jonathan Groß (talk) 18:36, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Add inscriptions as a subclass of publication? edit

  Notified participants of WikiProject Antiquity

Hi all, I'm puzzling out how to crosswalk some metadata related to inscriptions into Wikidata, and came across an issue I'd appreciate this group's feedback on. I'd like to stipulate that the Lyon tablet Q3108 has two columns of engraved text. When I tried to express this using the "column" property Property:P3903 I get an error stating: "Entities using the column property should be instances of publication (or of a subclass of it), but Lyon Tablet currently isn't." My question is: should inscriptions from antiquity be considered subclasses of publication? If so, how do I go about making such a change in WD? Grateful for help and insights! Ahc84 (talk) 19:16, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Ahc84:, column (P3903) works in the same fashion than page(s) (P304), which itself is different from number of pages (P1104). That is, I'm not sure there exists a property for what you want to say. But ultimately yeah, inscriptions probably should be subclasses of publications, in the sense that they are material and not immaterial like a work. To change that we'd need to change the superclasses of inscription (Q1640824), which for the moment are messy. There is a Wikidata:WikiProject Epigraphy where this inquiry might be more adequate. --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 19:46, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Brill's New Jacoby identifier missing edit

Hi, I just wrote w:de:Aratos von Knidos (= Q121320461) and realized that we only have an identifier for Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker (FGrHist), not for Brill's New Jacoby, or am I missing something? In many cases it's the same number but as I understand it, BNJ created some new entries as well. Is that correct and do we need a new identifier?

Notified participants of WikiProject Antiquity Tolanor (talk) 20:40, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Tolanor: surely correct. The issue was raised here by @Jahl de Vautban:, who correctly highlighted that covering all the parts of FGrHist (I-III, IV, V) and BNJ could require many properties and was worth a thorough reflection on the best way to cover them; ideally we should have the smallest number of properties covering all of them, but the overlaps are not fully clear. IMHO we should definitely try to have a clear plan of the entire situation and propose one or more missing properties in one batch; of course we all agree about the final aim of covering all the parts of FGrHist and BNJ. --Epìdosis 21:15, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Great minds think alike! ;) (Although yours is certainly better than mine, as I already forgot about the earlier discussion.) Is it possible to create an integrated identifier that would create a link both to FGrHist and to BNJ? --Tolanor (talk) 22:59, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Trying to reorganize my intervention in that discussion, the entities are: FGrHist I-III, FGrHist IV, FGrHist V, BNJ, BNJ 2; among these five entities, three groups share the same IDs: FGrHist I-III (formatter https://dx.doi.org/10.1163/1873-5363_boj_a$1) with BNJ (formatter https://dx.doi.org/10.1163/1873-5363_bnj_a$1) and BNJ2 (formatter https://dx.doi.org/10.1163/1873-5363_bnj_a$1) vs FGrHist IV and FGrHist V (formatter https://dx.doi.org/10.1163/1873-5363_jcv_a$1).
So I think that: 1) we need a property for FGrHist IV and V; 2) we should decide if we want either
2.1) to use this sole property for FGrHist I-III and BNJ and BNJ2, adding two formatter URLs (however, only one formatter URL is default and it can happen that, if e.g. FGrHist I-III is the default formatter URL, it doesn't reach IDs only in BNJ, or viceversa if BNJ/BNJ2 is the default formatter URL) or
2.2) to maintain this property for FGrHist I-III and create a new property for BNJ and BNJ2 (defaulting to the formatter URL of them, I'm not sure which; BNJ2 should be more updated than BNJ, but I fear it doesn't cover yet all the IDs of BNJ, so some links could fall into nothing; so probably better using BNJ as default), which could be the best solution unless BNJ2 adds new IDs in comparison with BNJ, in which case we should
2.3) maintain this property for FGrHist I-III and create two new properties, one for BNJ and one for BNJ2. I hope this reflects well the present situation. --Epìdosis 07:32, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
This table sums up the concordance between FGrH I-III, BNJ1 and BNJ2. If the Jacoby online's Introduction is to be trusted, BNJ1 should be completed and covering all that was in FGrH I-III and we could switch to it in the formatter URL. BNJ2 completion is planned for 2030, so let's see in a few years if we can do the switch. For FGrH IV and V however I don't see any other solution than creating a new ID. In an ideal world someone would have done a custom URL resolver that would redirect to the good version Jacoby, but I don't think it exists yet. --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 11:19, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
But isn't that what the Jacoby Müller concordance people have created, more or less? They have a page for every author with the links to FHG, FGrHist and BNJ material. Maybe we should correspond with them? --Tolanor (talk) 12:16, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Help with a potential merge? edit

Notified participants of WikiProject Antiquity Antiquity nerds, please help! I suspect these two items for Medinet Habu need to be merged: Q932622 and Q656040 , but when I attempted the action using the merge wizard, it threw up a bunch of errors so I cancelled. What am I not seeing? Does this need merging? Ahc84 (talk) 16:21, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Seemingly Medinet Habu (Q932622): archaeological locality situated near the foot of the Theban Hills on the West Bank of the River Nile opposite the modern city of Luxor, Egypt is the broad archaeological site where Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III (Q656040): mortuary temple of Ramses III, in Egypt is situated; so two different concepts, not to be merged; in fact, a lot of Wikipedias have articles for both. --Epìdosis 17:21, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Clavis Clavium edit

Notified participants of WikiProject Antiquity: Clavis Clavium ID (P7908) should really get a mix'n'match catalogue. Is anybody able to set up a webscraper? Jonathan Groß (talk) 18:37, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Queries edit

  Notified participants of WikiProject Antiquity

Hello all, I have just added two queries to the main page to highlight ancient authors and works that we currently have in Wikidata, as well as the various identifiers that link to them (in fact the queries' results are gathered from the identifiers). I have tried to set up some Listeria list for an easier consultation, but it wasn't successful (and probably they are too many rows). Still, if someone want to have a try, I'll be grateful.

I have also improted the ancient philosopher tree graph from Wikidata:WikiProject Ancient Greece, as it contains various Latin philosophers. Currently the graph is only able to show one teacher per item, so there is room from improvement.

In any case, feel free to improve the queries and also add your own! --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 18:06, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
