The genus is named after Miss Winifred M. A. Brooke (1894-1975), an Englishwoman who collected in Bolivia from early December 1948 until November 1950. She also collected in South Africa and Sarawak, was President of the Alton Natural History Society (Anonymous, 1976; Hawkes & Hjerting, 1989), and published Sketches from Nature in Northern Ireland (Brooke, 1935).
