Motivation edit

This will replace Wikidata qualifier to describe the subject of a statement (Q115396232) and Wikidata qualifier to describe the object of a statement (Q115396176). This is also to de-pollute the use of instance of (P31) on properties. Lectrician1 (talk) 23:14, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • I went ahead and renamed the property from "subject of qualifier" to "qualifier applies to", which I think is clearer and also in line with my other proposal action applies to . Feel free to revert if you disagree. I still have to form an opinion on this proposal. --Push-f (talk) 21:44, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I undid because we literally use the subject/object terminology in the above properties. We should keep using them for clarity. Lectrician1 (talk) 03:16, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I   Oppose the label "subject of qualifier" since it's very confusing. A statement has a subject, predicate and an object. A qualifier does not have a subject. Under "subject of qualifier" I would understand the subject of the statement that is being qualified. --Push-f (talk) 07:50, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree that using subject here is likely a bad idea because it conflicts with the meaning of subject of the statement. One name that comes to my mind would be 'referent of qualifier', but it might be worthwhile to look whether there's a better way to express this. ChristianKl10:02, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Push-f @ChristianKl A qualifier does have a subject... it's just that that subject is "abstracted away". Every property needs to have a subject and object. Qualifiers are properties so they must have subjects. Also, I give note that I am referencing the parent statement subject or value with the value of this property. See the example. Can you cite a single reliable source that states that properties have subjects and objects? Because I am quite certain that it's a misuse of terminology. --Push-f (talk) 16:32, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Push-f The terminology of subject/object is standard to RDF... https://www.w3.org/TR/rdf11-primer/#section-triple Lectrician1 (talk) 13:44, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes:

The relationship is phrased in a directional way (from subject to object) and is called in RDF a property.

As you can see a property is always from a subject to an object ... so saying "subject of qualifier" would refer to the subject of the statement.

  Oppose very unclear proposal. /ℇsquilo 18:11, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
