Thelady, dressed in a black velvet jacket and a scarlet petticoat,stands, with her back to the spectator, holding a glass of wineto the light, which appears to attract the attention of a gentle-man, wearing a yellow jacket with straw-coloured sleeves,who sits at the end of the table, opposite the window, havinghis gray cloak thrown across his lap, and his hat and featherslying on his knee ; the second gentleman, seated at the fartherside of the table, is amusing himself with two tobacco pipes.At the same time a woman servant, with a pot of embers inher hand, is crossing the room, in front of a large projectingchimney, over which hangs a picture. A brilliant light isadmitted at the window, which falls upon the group offigures, and is admirably diffused throughout the room, pro-ducing the most natural and agreeable effect. 2 ft. 5 in. by 1 ft. 11 in.—C.
