The scene previa the interior of ahandsome apartment, suitably furnisl • bich are a lady and a gentleman, and their two chihlr- tbfi lady, elegantlyattired in a scarlet corset, bordered witfe ermine, and an em-broidered satin petticoat, is seated in front, with a child at herside, holding a birds-nest in its hand ; on the left of the ladyis a youth, dressed in the rich costume of the period, with astick in hie hand, apparently approaching his mother. PETER VAN SLINGELANDT. 57 father of the family, habited in a plain morning robe, stands onthe farther side of a table, extending his left hand to take aletter from a negro servant; his right hand is placed on a book,lying on the table, which is covered with a rich Turkey carpet;a vase, containing flowers, is on the table, and an antique arm-chair stands in front of it; a spaniel lies asleep at the ladys feet. This is the most consequential picture which the writer knows,by this painter; and it is probably the one mentioned by Deseamps,representing the family of M. Meerman; in the execution ofwhich, the artist was engaged three years, he having devoted awhole month to the painting of the ruffles and frill only of theyoung gentleman; and, indeed, such is the extraordinary finishingof this picture, that it requires the aid of a magnifying glass todiscover the delicacy of its pencilling. It was bought by Monsieur D. Angevelliers, of an Englishbrewer, for the sum of 12,000 fs. 480/. It is
