Description |
English: A kaag (ship) going to windward in a fresh breeze A view of a kaag at sea in a fresh breeze. The kaag is shown on the right with the sea breaking over her bow. Her striped masthead pennant is of the Terschelling and Vlieland. Just behind her a smalschip is partly visible. In the left there is a ship at anchor with a sprit-rigged vessel nearby and a boat pulling towards her. Other vessels under sail are shown in the distance and land is visible in the left far distance. There are no distinctive features to identify this as the Texel although the painting has always been thought to show the entrance of the Texel. As there is no sign of the prominent tower Brandaris on Terschelling, it is more likely that the scene is intended as a view from Den Helder with the distant ships at anchor in Texelstroom. This painting may be a 19th century copy of the steel engraving of the painting by Fittler which is after Lord Ellesmere's original painting now in Museum of Fine Arts Toledo Ohio USA. |
