Description
English: An English brig with captured American vessels

A scene during the American Revolutionary War. An English brig in broadside view is shown preparing to hoist its sails. There is a large amount of activity on board and the artist has shown some figures in the rigging. To the right and left of the ship are smaller American vessels captured by the brig. They are flying the English flag, to denote their capture, in addition to the Rebel American merchant ensign of 1777.

The painting is signed and dated ‘F. Holman 1778’.
