Il tabernacolo, o reliquiario, fu commissionato all'Angelico insieme ad altri tre (`Madonna della Stella', `Incoronazione della Vergine' `Dormitio Virginis e 'Assunzione della Vergine' Boston, I. Stewart Gardner Museum) da Fra Giovanni di Zanobi Masi, per S. Maria Novella, morto il 27 giugno 1434.
