English: Mrs. Thornton (?-1865). Dr. Wm Thornton was the 1st Architect of the Capitol in Washington DC. Mrs. Thornton was a well known socialite and was involved in a strange case involving a slave threatening her with an axe. Painting exhibited in 1922 in the Union League in NYC.
