Description
English: Portrait of Hortense-Félicité de Mailly-Nesle (1715-1799), one of the five famous de Nesle sisters.
  • "La duchesse de Mazarin commanda à Jean-Marc Nattier, en 1740, les portraits des deux dernières filles du marquis de Nesle, ses cousines. On ne sait cependant pas à quel emplacement elle les destinait. Nattier représenta Hortense-Félicité, marquise de Flavacourt, en "Silence" et Anne-Marie, marquise de La Tournelle, en "Point du jour". Ces deux portraits allégoriques obtinrent à Versailles un vif succès et furent à l’origine de la carrière officielle de Nattier.Le tableau original de 1740, représentant la marquise de Flavacourt en "Silence", couronnée d’un croissant de lune et confisquant le carquois et les flèches de l’Amour endormi, est malheureusement perdu, mais il en existe plusieurs répliques et copies (cf. Burollet, Thérèse, 2004, p.232-234). La toile du musée Cognacq-Jay, de format ovale, est une copie du buste du portrait de 1740, exécutée d’après l’œuvre originale ou l'une de ses répliques." [1]
