Description
The Kalifen was a Danish cutter, built in 1858 with racing in mind by E. Benzon. It actually came second in the first Danish Yacht Race the same year. In 1859 it was sold to the Danish Ministry of the Interior as a fishery inspection vessel, and kept its name. It is probably shown to the right, flying the official Danish double-pointed swallowtail flag. The name Kalifen was inspired by a very popular play - by Erik Bøgh - from 1857, Kalifen paa Eventyr (Adventures of the Caliph).
