La confrérie des Pénitens Noirs de la Miséricorde (fondée en 1586 par un monsieur appelé à la romaine "Pompée Catilina") se donne pour mission d'accompagner spirituellement et matériellement les prisonniers (la prison est juste à côté - le mur à gauche). Les pénitents demandent en 1739 à l'architecte Thomas Lainée de restaurer la chapelle et reconstruire la façade. Jean-Baptiste termine les travaux après la mort de Lainée.
