Commissioned by the prominent Italian Barberini family, this prestigious and dynamic set of eight tapestries depicts the tragic love story between Trojan hero Aeneas and Dido, Queen of Carthage, based on Virgil’s ancient Roman epic poem The Aeneid. It was designed by the internationally renowned Roman painter Giovanni Francesco Romanelli and woven in Antwerp before 1679.
