Large and small round motifs in a linear framework form this geometric design made in open cutwork, now known as reticella. Its fineness was cut from a linen cloth whose woven grid provided a firm ground for the embroiderer to build her lace. A similar design for open cutwork was published in a pattern book by Frederic de Vinciolo in Paris in 1587.
