Daumier's witty pictures of contemporary types included several drawings, prints, and paintings in which he explored a theme he knew well: collectors and other viewers perusing art works. Sometimes he caricatured his subjects' greediness, smugness, or stupidity, but in this example the three men seem to study the objects with sincere appreciation.
