Red chalk, used prolifically in Renoir’s drawings from the 1890s onward, suited the loose handling of the artist’s late style. In Peasant Girl with Dog we see Renoir attempting to recapture the Impressionist spontaneity of his youth. As in his earlier pastel, Mother and Child (nearby), this drawing of a pretty girl seated beside a bale of hay idealizes rural life.
