Description
This rare altar frontal depicting the Lamentation is acclaimed for its emotional intensity and volumetric images. Six tearful, elaborately draped figures are shown mourning over the body of Christ. It was designed by Cosmè Tura, renowned court artist to Ercole I d’Este, duke of Ferrara, where it was woven in tapestry weave. The technique was introduced in Italy by Flemish and French weavers during the 1400s. Christ’s stiffened body is arranged in the shape of the cross. His shoulder rests on the Virgin’s knees, Saint John cradles his left arm, and Mary Magdalen supports his feet. Joseph of Arimathea carries the three nails with which Christ was crucified.
