In a cool, shady room, througha window of which can be seen a group of buildings in a blazeof sunlight, a number of men are seated drinking and watch-ing the progress of a game of backgammon, or tric-trac. No. 88SIB ANTHONY VAX DYCK 1599—1641 WILLIAM LAUD, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY (Replica of Painting in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg) The head and shoulders of a man somewhat past the prime oflife, his hair of an iron gray, and silver streaks showing in hisshort, pointed beard and mustache. A cloak of red silk is castover his shoulders, concealing the arms, the outline of whichcan be indistinctly seen beneath its folds. The face, which is inthree-quarter view to the left, is of an aristocratic type. Height, 23 inches; width, 20 inches.
