English: Portrait of Margherita Gonzaga, Duchess of Ferrara (1564-1618), wife of Alfonso II d'Este (1533-1597)
Italiano: "ritratto di Margherita Gonzaga d'Este
Figlia del duca Guglielmo Gonzaga e sorella di Vincenzo I, sposò nel 1579 Alfonso II d'Este e si trasferì a Ferrara, dove visse fino alla morte del marito nel 1597. Tornò quindi in patria, dove morì nel 1618. Circa l'attribuzione del dipinto, Rodolfo Pallucchini nel 1959 lasciava alcune annotazioni sul verso della foto del ritratto, ricordando una vecchia assegnazione a Tiziano, già presente nel catalogo della mostra del 1912. Nel 1965 Justus Müller Hofstede ne discute in relazione al rubensiano "Ritratto di Margherita Gonzaga d'Este", già in Svizzera, collezione Bruppacher. Nel 1977 Frances Huemer, su suggerimento di Ludwig Burchard, riferisce la tela alla cerchia di Frans Pourbus, e da allora la critica sembra quasi del tutto concorde di datarlo ai primissimi anni del Seicento e di ritenerlo di mano fiamminga. Renato Berzaghi suggerisce una possibile attribuzione a un pittore ferrarese. Giunge insieme ad un altro ritratto di Margherita Gonzaga (NCTN 03269869) all'asta di Sotheby's del 2005. L'abbigliamento della donna fa pensare che il ritratto sia posteriore al 1603, anno in cui fonda il monastero di Sant'Orsola di cui diventa badessa" [1]
