Español: El cuadro representa el momento trascendental en que varios senadores, en representación del pueblo romano, acuden en busca del patricio Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, héroe dedicado a la labranza, para nombrarle dictador de Roma y pedirle que haga frente a los pueblos que amenazaban la ciudad. Cincinato había sido nombrado cónsul el 460 a.C. y después sería designado dictador de Roma en dos ocasiones, en 458 a.C. y 439 a.C., regresando a sus labores en su hacienda junto al río Tíber tras restablecer la paz. Este argumento de la Antigüedad clásica fue evocado con cierta frecuencia por el arte europeo desde el Barroco como ejemplo de honradez y ética política, exaltación de la falta de ambición y apego al poder del buen gobernante y justificación teórica de los regímenes absolutos y las dictaduras temporales para reinstaurar el orden de las naciones en tiempos de caos.
