La première version, en plâtre, était son premier envoi de Rome et fut exposée en 1886 à l'école des Beaux Arts et au Salon de 1887 où il fut remarqué par Puvis de Chavanne; il est acheté par l'État en 1894 et le marbre est déposé au musée du Luxembourg quatre ans plus tard.
