Title |
Langton Down Brooch |
||
Description |
English: A Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy Langton Down type brooch, probably dating to c. AD 25-75. The brooch is largely complete, missing only its pin and catchplate.
At the head of the brooch sheet copper alloy has been rolled to form a cylindrical casing, now open at the reverse due to abrasion and with open ends, 16.8mm wide. This holds a wire spring of eight coils in situ, although the pin itself is lost. Traces of a slot cut into the reverse to accomodate the pin can be seen on the lower edge of the reverse. The bow projects from the head with a width of 10.4mm, with an almost immediate break in angle of 90 degrees. The bow is flat with parallel sides and an unelaborated foot. A pair of symetrical, parallel, longitudinal recessed channels run down the face of the bow, with an incised groove on the intermediate ridge. Two vestigial projections expand from the reverse along its longitudinal median line, indicating the presence of a lost perforated catchplate. The bow is 44.1mm long, 10.4mm wide and 1.7mm thick (3.1mm and 2.8mm thick at the upper and lower catchplate stubs, respectively). The wings are 16.8mm from tip to tip and the cylindrical head is 3.9mm in diameter. Bayley and Butcher (2004:150) ascribe brooches with cylindrical spring covers to the first century AD and refer an example of Langton Down type (Hull T21) from a burial dated to 40-60 AD in St. Albans and another from a pre-75 AD context in Fishborne. Similar examples are illustrated by Mackreth (2011: plate 20, nos. 14842, 6453). Other similar examples on this database are SOM-891793, KENT-B7C38B and PUBLIC-F01BC1. |
