Utrecht, ca. 1475 ABM s62

Maria met kind, Agnes en Johannes zijn weergegeven in een kerkinterieur. Naast Agnes ligt een lammetje, dat refereert aan haar kuisheid en haar naam (Latijn: agnus=lam). Het lam verwijst bovendien naar het Lam Gods en Agnes’ verbintenis met Christus. In de Middeleeuwen wordt Christus beschouwd als de geestelijke bruidegom van vrouwelijke kloosterlingen. Door hun belofte van kuisheid binden zij zich geheel aan hem. Agnes wordt voornamelijk vereerd in kringen van Geert Grote (1340-1384), inspirator van de Moderne Devotie. In navolging van Geert Grote worden vrouwenkloosters gesticht onder bescherming van Agnes, zoals in 1420 in Utrecht. Wellicht komt dit paneeltje uit het Utrechtse Agnietenklooster.
