Nederlands: Middelrijns altaar

Middelrijn of Westfalen?, ca. 1410 ABM s25-28 en ABM s156-158

In de loop van de veertiende eeuw raakt het gebruik van een retabel (altaarstuk) steeds meer verbreid. Een retabel staat op een stenen altaartafel en heeft meestal twee zijluiken die op kerkelijke feestdagen worden geopend. Ook deze twee luiken maakten deel uit van een altaarstuk. Het middengedeelte is verloren gegaan. Wanneer het altaar is geopend, zijn de binnenzijden van de vleugels met daarop taferelen uit het leven van Maria te zien. Met hun stralende kleuren en gouden achtergrond maken zij een feestelijke indruk. In gesloten toestand zijn de in soberder tinten geschilderde scènes uit het lijden van Christus zichtbaar.
