Verrast kijkt Maria op van haar gebedenboek. De engel Gabriël vertelt haar dat ze een heel bijzonder kind zal krijgen. Dit moment wordt ook wel annunciatie genoemd, de aankondiging. ‘Je zult zwanger worden en een zoon baren, en je moet hem Jezus noemen. Hij zal een groot man worden en Zoon van de Allerhoogste worden genoemd’ (Lucas 1). Tussen Maria en de engel staat een witte lelie als symbool van Maria’s reinheid. Dit verfijnd geborduurde schild sierde ooit de achterzijde van een koorkap.
