Title
Medieval book fitting: Book fitting
Description
English:

A complete copper alloy book fitting of late medieval to post-medieval date c. AD 1400-1600. The book fitting is rectangular in plan, with a narrowed hooked terminal at one end and a falerd terminal at the other. The two arms of the flared section have rivets through which helps secure the front plate to the back plate. A third rivet hole is located centrally along the length of the front plate with an incised circular around it as decoration. The back plate is shorter, rectangular in plan and is plain and undecorated and extends past the terminal of the front plate - it is also a different patina which may suggest this back plate was a repair for the original. The hook on the front plate is backward facing and would have fitted into an eye or similar, this clasping the book closed.
