Until 1987 known and exhibited as Scene from Racine: Iphigénie en Aulis. Then a series of five wall paintings by Abildgaard were uncovered at Nytorv 5, Copenhagen. Each painting depicted a scene from an act of Voltaire's Le Triumvirat, including a wall painting similar to this one, showing a scene from Act Four. Furthermore, in Abildgaard's own book version of Voltaire's play, the painter had made notes in each act in preparation for the paintings.
