Description
English: "The pose and facial expression of the Cupid resemble those of an Amor by van Dyck (see Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony van Dyck, Freren, 1988, no. 749), which Largilliere is likely to have seen when he was in Antwerp as a pupil of Antoni Goubau's in the years 1668-1674. The close thematic, aesthetic and costume resemblance between this and the celebrated portrait of the actress Marie-Anne de Châteauneuf, called Mademoiselle Duclos (1664-1748) in the rôle of Ariadne (Paris, musée de la Comédie-Française) has in the past prompted an identification of the sitter as Mlle. Duclos." [1]
