Description
English: Paddle steamer Superb off Folkestone

A painting showing the cross-channel steamer ‘Superb’, approaching a harbour, although, despite the title it is unclear whether this is Folkestone or Boulogne. She flies the red ensign and her name is shown on the pennant flying from her foremast. The harbour wall can be seen in the distance with the spires of the churches and the roofs of the port beyond. Other shipping is shown approaching the harbour. A small fishing boat with her red sail lowered is shown laden with passengers on the right.

The ‘Superb’ waa built by Scott's of Greenock, worked for the General Steam Navigation Company and ferried passengers between Folkestone and Boulogne. The painting is signed and dated 1825.
