El convento fue construido durante los años 1705 y 1725 por el arquitecto Diego Antonio Díaz. Sin embargo un incendio acaecido en 1761 arruinó gran parte de su construcción, sobre todo la iglesia, la cual se reedificó en 1762 bajo la dirección del arquitecto Antonio Matías de Figueroa.

Precisamente de lo construido por Diego Antonio Díaz se conserva integra la portada del templo que aquí se muestra.
