Le titre du tableau est une citation de la chanson "Oh Tahiti, la belle contrée". Les 4 figures symbolisent la destinée du genre humain. Au centre, la femme qui cueille un fruit est une allusion au péché originel, les deux femmes à gauche sont des figures d'intercession, à droite le cavalier incliné évoque la mort, comme la chienne avec ses chiots.
