Description
Українська: Saint Barlaam, the fisrt hegumen of Kyiv Caves monastery. Варлаам, ігумен Печерський - ? - бл. 1065 р. Преподобний. Пам'ять 11 жовтня і 2 грудня. Перший настоятель Печерського монастиря (1061-1062?). Син київського боярина Іоанна. Пострижений у ченці 19 листопада 1060 р. преподобним Никоном Великим. Став ігуменом Печерської общини приблизно у лютому 1061 р. За ігуменства Варлаама був закладений перший наземний дерев'яний монастир на Дальніх печерах. Незабаром князь Ізяслав Ярославич призначив прп.Варлаама ігуменом новоствореного "родового" Дмитрієвського монастиря у Києві. На початку 1060-х років преподобний здійснив паломництва до Палестини та Константинополя. Повертаючись з другої подорожі, занедужав і вимушений був зупинитися у Володимирському Святогорському Зимненському монастирі, де і помер. Перед смертю прп.Варлаам заповів усе, куплене ним у Греції для власного монастиря, передати Печерській обителі. Його мощі спочивають у Ближніх печерах.
