Description
English: The East Indiaman 'East Indian'

This painting by Thomas Binks (1799–1852) shows a view across open water towards an East Indiaman and an American vessel in the middle ground. A small cutter can be seen in the right foreground. The partly clouded sky, the sails and the choppy waves indicate a fresh breeze. Though clearly identified in the curatorial records as having the above title, derived from the flag shown flying from the mainmast, there appears to be no reference to a vessel with such a name in the literature related to the East India Company. The painting has been signed and dated 1819.
