Italiano: "Il dipinto raffigura Giulia Varano (1523-1547) prima moglie di Guidobaldo II; tale identificazione proposta per la prima volta da Gronau viene generalmente accolta dalla critica successiva; lo studioso, in particolare, lo identifica con il dipinto così descritto nell'Inventario della Guardaroba di Pesaro del 1623-1624 `Un quadro mezzano di tela sopra tavola con cornici d'ebano con lavoro dell'arme di casa Varana con G.G. legati insieme ne cantoni foglie e ghiande di cerqua col Retratto della Duchessa Giulia Varana` e fonda la sua ipotesi sul motivo della doppia G che decora l'abito della donna, allusivo al nome dei due coniugi (Guidobaldo e Giulia) e sulla veste color cremisi che indossa, la stessa richiesta da Tiziano nel 1547 per realizzare il ritratto (lettera del 8 novembre 1547 inviata da Paolo Mario, uno dei più fidati servitori di Guidobaldo, al Leonardi, suo ambasciatore a Venezia; cfr. Gronau 1936, pp. 7, 65-66, 97-98). Il dipinto mostra alcune incertezze stilistiche che rivelano con evidenza interventi di bottega." [1]
