Notes | Rubens' prime version of this composition, known as The Spinola Rubens, dates of 1615 and this work appears to be a contemporary copy by artist's workshop. The subject derives from biblical and apocryphal texts dealing with the early life of Christ. It depicts the infant John the Baptist greeting his cousin Jesus. The lamb refers to the Infant Christ, as written in St John's Gospel (1: 29): "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." The relationship between the two children is a premonition of the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
