• Not quite sure if I should file this as a bug or not, but I would much prefer for the "start merge.js" link in the dropdown to simply take me to the form, instead of forcing me to refresh on the other item to be merged. • It cannot merge Q6769634 with Q9908366. After removing link and label from Q9908366 nothing more happens, and it continues to display "Please wait ..." until manually stopped. I don't know what is special about these two items, but the error is reproducible after reverting the changes made to Q9908366. • If the merge target has one English label, and the duplicate has a different one, the target's label is overwritten. Sometimes that's a good thing, but sometimes the original label is better. Not sure if bug or otherwise

Believe it or not while merging Q13156150 with Q325205; I had the message Edit Conflict. I closed the message and reloaded the page Q13156150 only to found the page empty and content merged with the latter one. Then I went to Request for deletion page and found that request was made as per regulation so not sure were the conflict occurred.--Vyom25 (talk) 06:50, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

broken link after merge

Hello,

I think there is a little bug with this Gadget : when two Item are merged, links from other items to the deleted item are not updated to the final item.

Exemple :

• Prince Wilhelm of Hesse and by Rhine (Q4355233) and Prince Wilhelm of Hesse and by Rhine (Q2614367) are merged,
• Prince Wilhelm of Hesse and by Rhine (Q4355233) is then deleted
• Prince Wilhelm of Hesse and by Rhine (Q4355233) was declared as child of Q269351 and Q703423 : old value of Prince Wilhelm of Hesse and by Rhine (Q4355233) is not replace by Prince Wilhelm of Hesse and by Rhine (Q2614367).

Problem in merging

Dear all, Can someone tell me what is the problem in merging a page with another. From last few days I am trying to merge things and it is working almost but at the end it shows an error (error http). It happened to me once but at that time my net was disconnected so may be that was the reason in my case. Other thing is sometimes what happens is it merges two items perfectly and puts a request for deletion for empty item but then doesn't load the target page. Yes, you are write. Most of the time it is merging perfectly but not loading the page. But some times (Didn't saw in last 2 days) it is not putting delete request also and sometimes incomplete merging. So I think according to your message I have to leave it. correct me if I am wrong. Please elaborate incomplete merge... because if you are talking about statements they are merged fine but you can still see them on original item. Cannot merge two items

I cannot merge Q4640156 and Q242543 with Gadget-Merge.js. Each time I try, label and sitelink is removed from Q4640156, and then nothing more happens. The progress window continues to display "Moving site links..." until manually closed. I have tried with both Firefox 22.0 and Chromium 28.0 with same result. It works fine for hundreds of other items that I have merged with the tool. Byrial (talk) 15:13, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Update: Q4640156 has a sitelink en:523 BC which is a redirect page to an article linked to another item. The gadget should detect that something is wrong instead of just stop. Byrial (talk) 15:23, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Edit Conflict at RfD

Hi, in an earlier discussion I was told that script tries three times in case of edit conflict at RfD. Now I wanted to ask you that is it possible to increase this attempts? Because I get on an average two edit conflicts out of 10. Some how if it can be reduced to one then it would save a lot of time.(I would confess here that sometimes I get edit conflicts on my own work as I try to merge two different set of items at the same time. But still there are a lot of cancellations due to edit conflicts. I enabled watchdefault in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-watchlist but I don’t want Wikidata:Requests for deletions on my watchlist. Every time I merge a item the page is on my watchlist again. The following patch should not change the watchlist setting for this page:

Choosing the right page to delete

I thought the gadget kept either the most linked, the longest, or the more ancient item so that it does not break incoming links (includingg those in other websites). In later versions gadget had tend to choose longest item but it changed... Choosing most linked or the longest or the more ancient item are totally different criterias and choosing one them needs consensuses IMO. Currently gadget is choosing more ancient item if you check "Always merge into the item with lowest Qid" on options but I guess it would not be nice if I put a Combo box in gadget to let merger decide which strategy she/he prefer...

Anyway, I am thinking to implement a "smart destination detect" option by this criteria, "more linked item, if they linked equally then more ancient by lowest Qid" but before this I like to see community consensus about preferred merge destination choosing strategy. –ebraminio^talk 07:21, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Older items are also more likely to be the most linked and the more likely to be "lengthy" (which is simply a different form of linking), per network theory. This has been my observation (anecdotal) as well, and so one might best be served by making the checkmark for the "always merge" option a default (but still offer the option to decheck). What should happen is that there should be a mass of linking/delinking by either this gadget or another. The bot-gadget doesn't currently suffice. I just pointed out, that I´ve tried to unify the usage of the German terms for "merging". There were three different words used in German: "zusammenlegen", "zusammenfügen" und "zusammenführen" which all describe the same thing, the process of merging. So I decided to use only "zusammenlegen", because it was the most common term and I replaced most if not all of the synonyms in the Help: space. It´s just this gadget where still "zusammenfügen" is in use. Hang with novalue

Script does not work in IE: Array.indexOf is undefined

The Internet Explorer 8 does not know a indexOf function on arrays, that means the following line gives a fatal:

Move links

Why does the tool don't move links from other items? This is a step that should be done after merging, and when using this helpful little script, there's more steps to do for me than otherwise - as in the end, the merged item is loaded, I have to go and find and load the now empty one again. Adjusting those links automatically might contain some dangers (if I merge two items A and B that don't really belong together, then after undoing the merge itself I have to check all links to A whether they should actually point to B or possibly A and B) and some difficulties (what to do if I want to merge A and B, but A links to B? What to do if item Z already links to A and B, but with different qualifiers etc.?), but it would save a lot of effort in normal cases, and it would avoid that one occasionally would have to fix links that point to already deleted items. --YMS (talk) 16:52, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Error

Yesterday I got an error when merging. The merging went fine, but he couldn't add a new deletion request. The reason I got yesterday was "http". Nothing more. Now I got another error, named: "Error: editconflict". Is this related to the previous error or is it just coincidence and did I really have an edit conflict with someone else? Http is a time out when rfd page had more of ~150-200 request, all go ok but not reload destination page some time don't put request on rfd. edit conflict instead appears when there is a conflict of edit on the rfd page , the tool merge the pages but does not insert the page to be deleted in rfd . In both cases it would be appropriate to give the possibility to repeat the operation instead of giving only an error message. These errors happen very often and more becomes large page rfd the greater errors until it becomes almost impossible to work. would also be appropriate that lowestQid and requestDeletion are checked by defaultRippitippi (talk) 22:49, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Maybe it's an idea to use a "speedy" or "delete" template (example on enwp: en:Template:Db) which gets added on the item rather than adding it to a request page. I increased number of deletion request to ten. Lets list what would be possible solutions for fixing the deletion process problem:

• Putting {{Delete}} on talk page of merged item
• Making a merge/delete special property
• Creating parallel RfDs. 10 RfDs with randomly distributed requests on them.

As for ebraminio's proposal's: The speedy delete template would be a great solution - edit conflicts being extremly unlikely then, no additional RfD pages needed, and there's no discussion on the deletion requests anyway, usually. However, are bots/scripts able to put some kind of template or flag on a Wikidata item? Users aren't (and the would also not be able to remove them or contest them). Putting the template on the talk page, means creating a new page and delete it after the item is deleted. The RfD provides a delete link where the merged item is included, so that is possible to find the new one. In my opinion there should be a merge or delete property with string (or better wikitext) value, where the value can contains the delete reason, with that reason the delete can be done. And to delete a page, the script has to replace the whole content with the one claim (wbeditentity allwos a clear, but not setting claims, which makes this impossible at the moment). Customized "list" for deletion submission

In the above request, the user was thinking to add the pages (presumably manually) to a list he would maintain, and then periodically submit for deletion.

I think that could be automated.

I think an automated bot (like this) would be highly more viable for such tasks. A bot runner can configure such bot to watch a bulk merge request project page and we can limit user requests to that request page with mediawiki abusefilter just to trusted users. IMO a MediaWiki gadget should only do things can be easily reverted manually, that is why I don't like implementing batch merger (merge two or more item to one item or the above one) and don't want implement back links mover anymore (that both are implemented technically). Of-course I won't remove these features if it got implemented by someone else and that is just my personal opinion about gadgets :) –ebraminio^talk 17:52, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

That's not a task for humans. As the tool trys to add a new section, the system detects the edit conflict automatically. All there is to do is to try again, whether a human does it (comparatively a lot of work) or the tool does it. You solved it yourself now, but to explain the error: That message appears if there is a sitelink to an article that has been deleted. If you remove this sitelink (in this case, ruwiki), merge.js will work. However, it is a nasty error and not really a helpful message. I've had a couple of errors while attempting to merge pages. The error message said "Error while "Demande de la suppression...": http". Here are the last three:

I made a slim version with that API on test.wikidata but it needs some testing, for example it will break when two items have label on a same language ({"servedby":"mw1129","error":{"code":"failed-save","info":"Conflicting labels for language en"}}) and it also may needs some other changes and testing. Adam: What was pointed out (and from what I can see) is that merges will fail if the labels are different in a particular language. What currently occurs is that the item being merged to has its label overwritten. I have tracked the issue with the failed merge on the test system at bugzilla:55960. @Izno: what do you think the return should be when the case you have described occurs? Merging of two different descriptions

Sometimes when merging two items, for one or more languages the descriptions of the two items to be merged do not match. I noticed that the description of the item merged from overwrites the description of the item merged into. Sometimes that does not seem the best solution. In most cases a description would not make a valid alias, which is an alternative to the label, not the description. Perhaps the gadget should not reload the target item after it's finished, but the diff of the edit you made there, at least in cases where some information was overwritten. This would give you the possibility to see what you've changed from what to what. Often you won't notice otherwise, as the labels and descriptions from languages not in your babel languages are not shown to you without additional effort. --YMS (talk) 12:53, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

For labels, your proposal would be good, I think. It would probably introduce some unnecessary aliasses, like with brackets, but that's better than losing some valid alternatives. Data loss after merge

Hi,

I merged from Q82645 to Q10304508 and noticed that the merge removed data from the source (see https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q82645&diff=104783197&oldid=104782960) without adding it to the destination. After manually fixing the missing links, the descriptions and labels are still lost. Is there any chance to fix them automatically? Why did the tool fail in transferring the data?

I just had the same problem when trying to merge Q14523606 into Q10058056. The first try failed with an error message, because Q7466917 had the same combination of label and description as Q10058056 should get with the merge. I changed the label of that third item, and tried to perform the merge again. Q14523606 was emptied and then deleted, but nothing was added to Q10058056.

I restored the deleted item, reverted my changes, reloaded the item and then successfully performed the merge, so there's no further action required in this specific case - but if this problem happens to occur often, it's a rather serious one, as it easily may lead to unnoticed loss of data. --YMS (talk) 10:29, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

The item El Viento (Q3050301) contains a link to Japanese wikipedia. This link is a redirect to the item which is linked in Earnest Evans (Q11285691). The merge.js gadget does not add redirects, it tries to add the correct link. But because that is already linked, it cannot execute correctly. Error while "Requesting deletion...": editconflict

The error message asked me to report the error here. I was merging Q8077522 with Q6098422 and requested a delition manually. I was wondergin why wasn't the higher Qid merged into the lower one automatically though? --Kimse (talk) 20:23, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Edit conflict

The gadget requested that this be reported, so: Received the message "Error while "Requesting deletion...": editconflict" while merging Q12127514 into Six Bridges to Cross (Q2697140). Suggestion: If the gadget gets an edit conflict while adding to the deletion requests, the gadget should try it again a couple more times; it shouldn't hurt, since it's just appending. --Closeapple (talk) 16:30, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
