Merge error

Trying to merge Q21437715 and Q15981101, obtaining error: "Error while "Merge with: Q15981101": Attempted modification of the item failed. (The two items cannot be merged because one of them links to the other using property P360)". Please help. --Niklem (talk) 10:11, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Wikimedia lists shouldn't be merged with for example an subclass of a national monument, the error is legitimate. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 10:14, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Merge of Q27038733 and Q1235670

The topic is the same, Spanish cheeses. Please fix. Thank you Triplecaña (talk) 23:42, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

The merge is wrong in this case, they are different kind of items: one is an item about list of cheeses, the other is about the cheese. If you found error, you can move sitelink, but don't merge them --ValterVB (talk) 06:27, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

merging Q17458283 and Q4282148 failed

Attempted modification of the item failed. (The two items cannot be merged because one of them links to the other using property P527). Can someone fix this? DirkVE (talk) 14:08, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

One is an Rijksmonument complex (Q13423591) while the other is a normal Rijksmonument (Q916333). Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 14:57, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Hotlinking the merged item

I think it would be nice if the description that left by the tool provides a direct link to the other item. ChristianKl (talk) 11:22, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Note: the first part in summary is generated by wikibase, so it can't be changed here, I think.
As the associated patch is blocked in gerrit, creating a local gadget (which will change HTML of the page) for this need is welcome. It shouldn't be too dificult. --XXN, 19:23, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Merge Q27306126 and Q28934653

Both items refer to the exact same person, but I couldn't merge them for some reason. Victor Lopes (talk) 03:07, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Because the latter links to the former: Vintage Culture (Q28934653)has part(s) (P527)Vintage Culture (Q27306126). I don’t know whether it’s good, but if they are really the same, you should remove this statement before merging them. (This problem is cleared in the merge dialog.) --Tacsipacsi (talk) 06:31, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Done, thanks for the help. I noticed they linked to each other, I just wasn't sure if I could proceed to remove the link myself. Victor Lopes (talk) 15:48, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

The problem is there are 2 categories for 1253 deaths on lbwiki. An item can have only 1 sitelink per wiki, so there have to be 2 items linking to each other. Error message with no reason specified

Hello,

I tried to use the Merge.js gadget on Tassaert, Jean Pierre Antoine (Q27598487), attempting to merge it into Jean-Pierre-Antoine Tassaert (Q51990). This resulted in the following error message :

Erreur durant "Fusionner avec : Q51990" : Attempted modification of the item failed.
Rapportez l’erreur ci-dessus ici avec la source et la destination à fusionner.

I cannot see an obvious reason why this merge would not be possible. The message does not say much more. Can someone see the reason? Place Clichy (talk) 15:58, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Obviously, you should not attempt to merge a biographical article (Q19389637) to an item about a human (Q5). In the background, the failure was caused by Tassaert, Jean Pierre Antoine (Q27598487) linking to Jean-Pierre-Antoine Tassaert (Q51990) using main subject (P921). Matěj Suchánek (talk) 16:10, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
@Matěj Suchánek: Can you please precise ? Wikipedia site links on Jean-Pierre-Antoine Tassaert (Q51990) are "biographical articles" on this person, and so is the ADB dictionary entry currently linked at Tassaert, Jean Pierre Antoine (Q27598487). Why should they be treated differently? Are you telling us that all biographical articles on Wikipedia should be linked to biographical article (Q19389637) items instead of human (Q5)? What do you mean by "you should attempt to merge..."? Place Clichy (talk) 09:58, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
I made a typo, there should have been not.
Wikipedia articles indeed are biographical articles but on Wikidata they are connected to items they describe. However, the Wikisource page holds a text that is characterized by different properties (for humans there is name, date of birth etc., for texts there is author, topic etc.). That's why they are kept separate.
Note that Wikisource can also hold pages about authors that correspond to Wikipedia biographies. If there was one for this person, how would manage sitelinks when you can have at most one link to one wiki? Matěj Suchánek (talk) 10:05, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
I think I see your point. Indeed, there can be several encyclopedic dictionaries having an article about the same topic available in the same wikisource project. In that case, nothing could determine which article to link to. Indeed, the best wikisource sitelink would probably be the Author or Creator page of the individual, when there is one. In my opinion there bouths are about administrative division of Trinidad and Tobago. Aren´t they? --Unpocoloco (talk) 05:14, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
One is a type of administrative division, the other is a subclass of administrative territorial entity of a single country (Q15916867) as definitions can differ from every country. For example, someone might create the former counties of the country so that'll made another type of administrative division. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 07:03, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
Well, what I sow is almoust the same table in bouths groups of articles in wikipedia projects. If you take a look for exemple to chinese and french articles - where is the diference? (Sorry for my English). --Unpocoloco (talk) 09:31, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

attempt to merge Q327723 with Q22808767

While trying to edit the interlanguage links on the en.wp article Christian Ranucci to include a link to fr.wp (via "Edit links"), I failed to merge that article (Q327723) into the other articles on the subject (Q22808767) (fr:Affaire Christian Ranucci). I am a very experienced editor who has nevertheless always encountered problems with the MediaWiki interlanguage link system. I find the guidance there, including on the Merge tool, rather lacking. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Eric talk 16:02, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Christian Ranucci case (Q22808767)participant (P710)Christian Ranucci (Q327723). It can be seen from the French article’s title: Affaire Christian Ranucci. So these should be kept as separate items, even if it’s inconvenient that there is no interlanguage link between the French and the other four. You can create an article about Christian Ranucci himself in French, which can be connected to Q327723. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 18:28, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, Tacsipacsi. Are you saying that for the Wikidata interlanguage link system, the literal translation of an article title is more important than the content of the article?
  • The English article Christian Ranucci is essentially the same article as the French Affaire Christian Ranucci; in fact, I think much or all of the en.wp piece was simply translated from fr.wp. I don't think there would be a separate bio on en.wp for him, and there is none on fr.wp (I checked this before I posted, as I noted the Affaire in the fr title).
  • Note that on en.wp, we don't tend to use the word affair for a topic like this the way French does, though one could argue it would be more logical to do so. In the case of a murder where both perpetrator and victim would otherwise not meet Wikipedia's notability criteria, en.wp tends to title the article about the crime with one of their names (not ideal in my view).
  • Would you say that policy-wise, if the en article were retitled Christian Ranucci Affair, or Christian Ranucci's murder of Marie-Dolorès Rambla, the merge of the two Q IDs would be appropriate?
  • Note that the Wikidata Q ID page (what are these pages called?) for the fr article "Affaire Christian Ranucci" is titled simply "Christian Ranucci", without the "Affaire".
  • A system question, aside from the criteria for merging Q IDs: Why do you think the merge tool did not work? Eric talk 19:16, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
Re system question: Christian Ranucci case (Q22808767)participant (P710)Christian Ranucci (Q327723), ie. one item links to the other one. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 19:19, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, Matěj. I'm not sure I understand. I see that you changed the English label on 723, and that makes sense to me. But I still don't get why the en.wp article Christian Ranucci should not or cannot be equated with the fr.wp "Affaire" article, given that there will probably never be an en bio on him, and the fr Christian Ranucci simply redirects to the "Affaire" article. Would the proper approach be to change the title of the en article to "Christian Ranucci case", and have Christian Ranucci redirect to it? Eric talk 19:47, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
What you suggest would be perfect for moving the link to the other item (but this must allow the community of enwiki). Actually, you could move the link even now since you stated that the English article is about the case, not the person. However, after some time there may come a user who prefers treating articles by their title, not the content and they may move the link back and break the connection.
Still, there will stay two separate items on Wikidata, no matter whether they have any links or not since these are two different concepts (a person vs. a criminal case). Matěj Suchánek (talk) 19:54, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
(edit conflict × 2) No, the content is the more important. However, if I see the articles (I don’t speak French, so I haven’t read it through), the English one looks like a usual biography (e.g. Early life section), while – as much as I understand of it – the French is focused on the event. So renaming the articles would not modify the fact that their focus is different. (Of course, the item label didn’t contain “affaire”, as you added the label without it.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:57, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Thanks to you both for your input. Tacsipacsi, you're right about the early life section, but the bulk of the article is about the case, and I don't think there would be an article on him otherwise. So do you think it would be appropriate to do as Matěj mentions above -- just move the link? If so, I'm still not sure how to do it so the merge tool will work... Eric talk 20:15, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

I’m not sure about it, but I’m not definitely against. Moving the sitelink consists of simply removing it from one item and adding it to the other. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:30, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
Okay, for now I've removed the en sitelink from 723 and added it to 767. But if anyone thinks that's not the way to do it in the end, I have nothing against it being reverted. Eric talk 21:55, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
...and now the fr link appears as I would expect on the en article, but not vice-versa. Apparently I have more to learn... Eric talk 22:01, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
Now I'm thoroughly confused: After my changes to the Q pages were reverted by YMS, why is en:Christian Ranucci still showing the interlanguage link to fr:Affaire Christian Ranucci?? Eric talk 22:36, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
It seems like we have serious cache problems again (it often occurs): I’ve cleared the cache, and now it shows the correct languages. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:54, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. For now I've just added old-style interwiki links to those articles. Eric talk 15:36, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

One is a museum in Litovel and the other is the building of the museum, which I believe is the same. --Jan.Kamenicek (talk) 13:32, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

No, they aren't the same. The museum is what's in the building (the building is just the walls, floors, ceiling etc., not whatever the building is used for. If the museum would be closed and something else came in its place, the building would remain the same. Mbch331 (talk) 08:07, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, before the museum closes, they are the same: when I go to the museum, I go to the building. I am not sure why should there be two separate items before the museum closes. Wikipedia has got an article which is about both the museum as an institution and the museum as a building. When the museum was renovated, it was the building which was being rebuilt by carpenters and bricklayers. Now there are two separate Wikidata items but only one of them can be connected with the encyclopedia article, although they both contain information concerning the subject of the Wikipedia article. So may I ask for advice how to deal with it? Jan.Kamenicek (talk) 19:17, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
The building is just the physical building regardless of what's in it. The museum is that what's in it. They are 2 different concepts. For Wikipedia it may be one article, but Wikidata doesn't make items per page, but per concept. For the wikilink, check what the article is mostly about (the building or the museum) and link the article to that item. The museum should have a P276 statement with the QID of the building. Check for example Rijksmuseum (Q190804) or British Museum (Q6373). Mbch331 (talk) 19:57, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
@Mbch331: Thanks, but your suggestions do not solve the problem. Both Wikidata items contain different kind of information. Wikidata serve as a basis for interwiki links and founding their items on different grounds than those on which Wikipedia articles are founded seems strange. If only one item is connected with the Wikipedia article, it means that the information in the other item is not accessible directly from the Wikipedia article, despite the fact that the Wikipedia article deals about the subject of both items. The article deals both about the institution and the building, it is impossible to separate it and decide which Wikidata item should be connected and which should be sacrificed. I noticed that the item on the institution contains the property "headquarter's location" which links it with the item on the building, but finding it is not as intuitive as a direct link from the Wikipedia article and not all unexperienced users may get it. --Jan.Kamenicek (talk) 21:23, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
Interwiki's is just one of the data you can add to an item. People tend to think that the base of Wikidata is the interwikis, but it's not. The base of Wikidata is the various concepts that exist. And Wikilinks is just one of them. Currently there's no solution to link two items to 1 Wikipedia article. Maybe in the future when it's technically possible to add redirect, a redirect can be the solution for the problem, but until then one of the items will lack an interwiki. Merging items because Wikipedia happens to have 1 combined article about 2 concepts is not the way to go. Mbch331 (talk) 21:40, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

merge of two reed categories

can reed (Q42890140) and reed (Q221455) be merged? I had problem of doing this, but cannot see why. I suppose this was caused by some German editors as both items only have German links in common--淺藍雪 00:27, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

No, they are about different things: reed (Q221455) is only for reeds of woodwind instruments (excluding free reed (Q9346712)), reed (Q42890140) is for all reeds (including free reed (Q9346712)). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 09:51, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
so you are saying all reed (Q221455) links are for reeds of woodwind instruments and all reed (Q42890140) links are for all reeds? Fine if they are, but I really do not see the need of splitting them into two categories as the difference is way too subtle. Might only work for German Wikipedia. --淺藍雪 17:59, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
I would not call the difference between musical instruments parts producing sound by means of vibrating lamella(s) (which includes the ones of accordion (Q79838)) and "mouthpieces" (in a very general sense) consisting of lamella(s) subtle. The one is the superclass of the other. You would probably not try to merge reed (Q42890140) and free reed (Q9346712). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 07:51, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
You have not answered how possibly you can guarantee articles in other languages work in the same way, and I think you are trying to mislead others, I have never said I am going to merge reed (Q42890140) and free reed (Q9346712). And yes, the difference between Q221455 and Q42890140 is very subtle, and I have no idea that based on what you can possibly split them into two categories so neatly. Is that just a complete coincidence that Q42890140 and Q221455 have no language in common expect German?--淺藍雪 14:12, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
I am sorry if the last sentence led to a misunderstanding: I never supposed that you would merge those two (and I didn't say so). I just took the relationship of reed (Q42890140) and free reed (Q9346712) to illustrate the relationship of reed (Q221455) and reed (Q42890140). You would not merge reed (Q42890140) and free reed (Q9346712) - why would you merge reed (Q221455) and reed (Q42890140)?
I don't know what you mean with "how possibly you can guarantee articles in other languages work in the same way"? What problem do you see exactly? Either an article is rather both about reed (Q221455) and free reed (Q9346712) - then it should link to reed (Q42890140) - or an article is rather only about reed (Q221455) or an article is rather only about free reed (Q9346712). Please note that I didn't create the German articles. I just set them in relation to each other and other items.
If you miss interwikilinks you can still set them locally on the article. If you think one of the articles linking to reed (Q42890140) should rather link to reed (Q221455) (or the other way round) you can move site links. I am really sorry if I somehow missed your point - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 09:12, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
Maybe it could help to draw the classification tree to illustrate the relationship between reed (Q42890140) and reed (Q221455):
If one or more articles don't fit into this, please tell me where and why. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 09:31, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

For some reason, the first is described as a surname and the second is described as a disambiguation page. You can't merge two items that have different descriptions because that would mean that they are not the same. -- -- -- 23:35, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Q30095027 & Q1785683

Both are lists of people with surnames, their descriptions match, both are not disambigs. For some reason, Q3502546 is listed as a subclass of Q47530495. -- -- -- 20:54, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation, subclass is nonsense, crosswiki articles to en wiki are equivalent in content.--Kacir (talk) 07:54, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
  • I don't see an advantage of mixing the two. Subclass relations should be fixed now. The enwiki article describes a specific function at a game. The item is used for the profession of the person of that function. Subclasses of "official" don't make much sense as subclass of the profession.
    --- Jura 14:03, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
  • I think there are several questions:
    (1) is the occupation "tennis umpire" a different concept than the function of an "official" at a tennis tournament? We do have distinct items for the occupation politician or statesman and the functions of head of state of country x, member of parliament of z, etc.
    (2) Where should the sitelinks go? If there are two items, this doesn't necessarily answer question (2).
    (3) If there was just one item, should its label be "umpire" or "official".

One describes the sport type, while the other item the company around it. Emptying one of the items is considered vandalism. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 16:24, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
It is a company not a sport. The sport is kickboxing. It'd be like calling all MMA (mixed martial arts) UFC when UFC is just a promotion. Please do not accuse me of vandalism when all I do (new as I am here) on wikidata and on wikipedia is try and maintain some accuracy for articles.ShadessKB (talk) 10:57, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
Just leave the second item be. In Wikidata, we sometimes need more items because consistency. If there was only one item (say the instance of type of sport (Q31629)), we couldn't link to it using a property that requires the target to be an organization. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:00, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
There'd be just the sport kickboxing item and then K-1 organization item. But yeah okay.ShadessKB (talk) 18:24, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

Development of tool necessary to transfer part of a Q number to another

The policy of Wikidata is to connect a Wikinews category with an article on Wikipedia/Wikivoyage/etc. Wikinews articles are not connected, unless the same article exists in another language. In the table below, however, many Wikinews categories were connected to the category and not to the article. As far as I know, there is not yet a tool to correct that. And it's a lot of work to do it manually. Is it possible to advance the merge tool with an option to transfer a part of a Q number (Wikinews categories) to another Q number?

They deal with the same arguments: Legionary of ancient Rome. --Pugliak (talk) 14:47, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
"Roman legionary" is a kind of "legionary", the latter doesn't need to be always associated with the ancient Rome. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 15:37, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

@JavierCantero: Can you explain why you have added has part(s) (P527) in Q767003? --ValterVB (talk) 11:20, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
@ValterVB: Q767003 is an anthology book (a collection of stories), which contains among others the one titled Q27980709 (winner of the Hugo Award for Best Novella in 1994) --JavierCantero (talk) 17:51, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
@JavierCantero:}} Thanks, @Ary29: I have moved Italian sitelink from Q767003 to Q27980709, I think that Italian page is about the novella not the book. --ValterVB (talk) 18:39, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Failed merge

I'm trying to merge Q6065231 and Q46139331 since it's the same work but I keep getting an error message asking me to report the problem here. Thanks! Loenstock (talk) 18:30, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

Ipomadon (Q46139331) is a translation of Ipomadon (Q6065231), which makes them not being the same. Mbch331 (talk) 19:15, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

Between Q17646569 and Q2524183 (Framlingham Castle). Kelly (talk) 15:50, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

I see that Q2524183 is part of Q17646569 so probably they aren't the same. --ValterVB (talk) 18:50, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Better error message

Currently the script says “Please report above error here with source and destination of merge.”. But in most cases, it’s not an error in the gadget itself, but the merge is not allowed. I suggest modifying the error message to for example “If you believe it’s a software error, please report it here with source and destination of merge.” —Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:21, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

Apparently is done now. Thanks! −ebrahimtalk 20:52, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
