Merge denied without permissions

I accidentally created Q30970922 and wanted to merge it with Q1305037 (since they are the same thing). However I got the message "Permission denied". I already posted a message on Ukrainian Wikipedia asking to merge Спільний рід interwikis with Common Gender before that, but got no reply. @Underfell Flowey: This is because common (Q30970922) is semiprotected (note the gray padlock in the upper right corner), so you indeed don’t have the permission to edit it, and merging is also an edit. @Beireke1: It seems to be caused by this double bot edit. If you remove either statement, I think it should work. By the way, this has already a reference with hash error occurs from time to time, so maybe the gadget could be made smart enough to handle it? (P.S. It would have made debugging a bit faster if you’d linked the Qid’s—that way I could have just clicked on them instead of copying the IDs to the search bar.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:28, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Merge Cyrillic alphabets

When coming across the Wikipedia article Cyrillic alphabets, I was astonished that there was no Russian version of it. Then I found out that the Russian article Алфавиты на основе кириллицы has almost exactly the same content and a very similar title; however, it is linked to Languages written in a Cyrillic alphabet, which redirects to Cyrillic alphabets. Consequently, I tried to merge Q867589 and Q867570, but it did not work. @Buncic: The way I interpret it, they seem to have different scopes as list of Cyrillic-script alphabets (Q867589) is a list and the interwiki links I checked are clearly lists, while Cyrillic-script alphabet (Q867570) is an article that not only list the alphabets but describes them individually in more detail as well. @FakirNL: This is because Category:1084 by country (Q97386509)instance of (P31)Wikimedia category (Q4167836) has the same reference twice. This issue (duplicate references stopping people from merging items) comes up quite often and probably needs a general solution, but as a workaround, removing one of them (or even both of them, as they don’t really add any value to the item in this particular case) should make the merge possible. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:30, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Suggestion for improvement

It would be great if there could be a warning if "normal" items are being merged with "wikimedia" items like disambiguations, redirects or such since they often have lots of descriptions that would be erroneous if merged. Ainali (talk) 13:45, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

The English article (and probably other languages) content covers both the process and the study and it's not necessary to have two separate items (with same title) that cover each other. • @संजीव कुमार: If you take a look at Agniveena Express (Q18109414), there are two values of the has part(s) (P527) property on that item: one for the up train and one for the down train. Because you were trying to merge the up train with the overall service item and the corresponding P527 statement was not removed, the merge could not go through. I see, indeed some of them are disambig pages and some are surname pages. Item Einhorn (Q258751) must be split. @Hjart: This is because Q50252637 has the very same reference twice for the located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) statement. Removing either of them will make the merge possible. By the way, this is by far the most common actual bug encountered when using the gadget; it’s a bug in the Wikibase software, but maybe the gadget could handle it (or at least explain the user the issue and how to fix it). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:18, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Couldn't merge two disambiguation pages Eshleman

The wikidata objects are both linked to a disambiguation page, but the property P1889 (different from) prevents the merge. The error message on Q21452070: "Error while "Merge with: Q1367628": The two items cannot be merged because one of them links to the other using the properties: P1889, P1889". But I think this property is set incorrectly. It states "family name has to use a different item than disambiguation pages". But that's simply wrong since both are disambiguation pages. • If you think w:Eshleman is a disambiguation page, you need to discuss this on English Wikipedia. Currently it's not. If it's changed, the sitelink can be moved from one to the other item. In any case, the items shouldn't be merged, because Wikidata uses specific items for family names and all disambiguation pages are added to disambiguation items. --- Jura 20:58, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

Merge syllabification (Q1898328) with hyphenation (Q11994045)

The Wikipedia articles connected in Q1898328 treat the same thing as the ones connected in Q11994045. They all describe how words can be broken down into syllables to make it possible to divide words at the end of lines using a hyphen. While it is true that, depending on the word used, the articles might put a slightly different emphasis on placing hyphens or defining syllables, it is rather unsatisfactory not to have an interwiki connection between, for example, w:es:Hifenación and w:fr:Césure (typographie) or between w:de:Worttrennung and w:en:Syllabification. No, they should not be merged. While it’s unfortunate if articles on more or less the same topic aren’t connected through interlanguage links, Wikidata is first and foremost a database, and it should describe different concepts in different items. Syllabification and hyphenation are clearly different. For example, the Hungarian word rendőr (L619931) is syllabified as ren-dőr, but it’s hyphenated as rend-őr, because compound words are hyphenated at the composition boundaries even if they aren’t syllabified that way. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:41, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Being a linguist, I totally agree that syllabification and hyphenation are not the same thing (and you don’t have to use Hungarian; even in English, there are many examples like dat-ing vs. [ˈdɛ͜ɪ.tɪŋ] or re-spond vs. [rɪsˈpɒnd]). However, w:en:Hyphenation is just a disambiguation page and sends readers for one of its two senses to w:en:Syllabification, and that article begins: “Syllabification (/sɪˌlæbɪfɪˈkeɪʃən/) or syllabication (/sɪˌlæbɪˈkeɪʃən/), also known as hyphenation, …” and exclusively treats the problem of line-breaks.

Bug with aliases identical to labels

Hi! I have sometimes noticed the following bug:

1. if, in a given language, the item A has the label X and the label B has the alias X,
2. and the items B gets merged into the item A (which is older),
3. then the alias X is copied from the redirected item B into the item A, thus being present along with the identical label X (example)

What to do in case of EntityContentTooBigException?

While trying to fix missing author name string (P2093) information in the many-author item Measurement of the Higgs boson mass from the H → γ γ and H → Z Z * → 4 ℓ channels in p p collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector (Q27349821) (see talk), I created a new item with complete P2093 information (caution: this new item Q110449462 is currently ranked 6th in Special:LongPages), with the idea of merging it into Q27349821. When attempting that merge, I got the message Error while "Merge with: Q27349821": [4891d323-e88c-47b4-8b5b-da849c262416] Caught exception of type Wikibase\Lib\Store\EntityContentTooBigException, and the merge gadget does not seem to have made an edit to either of the two items. I tried to do the merge via QuickStatements, but this failed too. The actual authors have been curated at Q27349821 so far. Not sure the consortium approach works at scale, as the precise author list differs between papers, so we would end up with lots of items about such consortia, which would be different from more formal consortia where membership fluctuation is not necessarily reflected in authorship statements. Next thing to try is perhaps to remove all the P2093 statements from Q110449462 for which Q27349821 already has a P50 statement, and then retry the merge. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:32, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Placement of buttons

The placement and decoration of buttons in the merge assistent dialogue seems pretty messed up currently:

• "Cancel" is at the top left corner in the header; black font is used
• "Merge" is at the top right corner in the header; black font is used
• "Postpone" is at the bottom left corner in the footer; highlighted blue font is used

Now I'm not a UI expert, but this does not seem to be a good design. Can this perhaps be consolidated in some way? My impression is that all buttons could be gathered in the footer section, and the "Merge" button should be more highlighted than the "Postpone" button since it likely is the action that most users are seeking to perform. —MisterSynergy (talk) 23:47, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

Some wikis prefer to call the articles on governmental ministerial bodies after the minister (since the minister is the core official of the ministry, and the ministry is basically his/her staff and working office), and some after the ministry itself. In Q2082286 he and es articles are called after the ministry as a body, just like ru article in Q20021285.
