Related to country (P17) and located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) (those are also used on items that are located in that area), and part of (P361).  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by SPQRobin (talk • contribs) at 20:11, 26 October 2013 (UTC).Reply

How to distinguish federal-level powers edit

If I want to specify that something only applies to the federal level of government and not things under the jurisdiction of state/provincial/constituent-country governments, should I link this property to Federal Government of the United States (Q48525) and Government of Canada (Q422404) rather than United States of America (Q30) and Canada (Q16), respectively? --Arctic.gnome (talk) 22:13, 12 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

This property had an horrifyingly muddled definition from its inception. I have started a RFC in an attempt to clear that up. Wikidata:Requests for comment/Property: belongs to jurisdiction. Circeus (talk) 20:12, 17 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. I am only reading about this now? I guess I don't have the talk pages of all properties on my watch list that I may be interested in. I wonder how I am supposed to be able to do that? Jane023 (talk) 11:44, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Use for non-public offices edit

@Billinghurst, Jura1: I think it's worth re-opening the question of whether this should apply to private organizations. A fair number of people are using this for university boards, religious orders, etc. Would there be any harm in expanding this to include private organizations, or should we make a new property for jurisdiction over organizations? --Arctic.gnome (talk) 15:19, 20 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

<shrug> I just fill data. jurisdiction (Q5982983) seems to be here by definition and be specific, so you are changing the basis of what envisaged.  — billinghurst sDrewth 15:32, 20 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

The description of this implies that this is only used for political jurisdictions. Is it really ok to use it with any kind of organization? Right now it seems to be limited to geographic places/political jurisdictions. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 19:48, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Can't use countries with this property edit

In the examples and in many many statements in WD there are countries added as value for this property. However, that is a constraint violation right now, because state (Q7275) and administrative territorial entity (Q56061) are not linked using P279 (bot are subclasses of political territorial entity (Q1048835)). I think state (Q7275) should be added to value-type constraint (Q21510865). Wostr (talk) 15:23, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

This property for protected area (Q473972) edit

This property should also be used for every item connected with NACSIS-CAT author ID (P271) and instance of (P31) to protected area (Q473972). Because protected areas are sometimes manged by the administrative territorial entity (Q56061) connected by located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) but in the most cases it is an higher administrative unit. --GPSLeo (talk) 13:30, 1 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Use of P1001 for datasets edit

I'm developing an Infobox for datasets (data set (Q1172284) in the French Wikipedia (Q8447) (see w:fr:Modèle:Infobox Jeu de données). I think that it would be really interesting to use applies to jurisdiction (P1001) to describe spatial coverage of a dataset. See for instance SIRENE (Q3509449). What do you think ? Would it be possible to add entity with class data set (Q1172284) in the list of possible entities for applies to jurisdiction (P1001) ? --PAC2 (talk) 21:28, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Change property to "applies to place"? edit

@SPQRobin, Lavallen, Izno, Filceolaire, Jura1, Macadamia1472: @Arctic.gnome, Jane023, Billinghurst, Wostr, Jarekt, GPSLeo: @PAC2, MF-W, Mahir256, Nikki:

This property has been used a lot for places that are not jurisdictions, and I'd like to rename it to reflect its use as applying to any place, not just jurisdictions. For example, see Euro+Med PlantBase taxon ID (P12380), where it has been used with values Europe (Q46), Mediterranean Basin (Q72499), and Caucasus (Q18869). And item Primate of the Orthodox Church in America (Q113784960), where it was used with value North America (Q49). Are there objections to revising the label and definition so that is clearly useable for any type of place? AdamSeattle (talk) 06:47, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

I would object based on that argument. "applies to place" is already an alias of valid in place (P3005), so it's not clear what the difference between the two properties would be if this one is made more broad. The second example, as far as I can tell, is intended to be the North American diocese mentioned on en:w:List of primates of the Orthodox Church in America which doesn't seem to have an item yet. This property doesn't make sense to me on Euro+Med PlantBase taxon ID (P12380) even if we were to call it "applies to place" (it applies to a taxon, not a place). You're also the only person who has used Mediterranean Basin (Q72499) and Caucasus (Q18869) with this property. - Nikki (talk) 20:56, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Applies to jurisdiction is an ill-defined property and I would be for deleting it (how does something apply to a place?). valid in place is actually okay since it's only meant to be used as a qualifier and it just indicates a statement is true in that place, not necessarily the entire item.
