Generalizing to other types of theses?

The scope of this property seems overly specific to me - people write theses for all sort of degrees. Also, the exact definition of doctoral theses also varies depending on the country… Could we consider broadening the scope? For instance by indicating the degree it applies to with a qualifier?

Also, how exactly is this property supposed to be used currently? The constraints seem to indicate that it should only be used as a qualifier, but the item provided as an example (Josef Niemeyer (Q15154650)) uses it as a main statement. − Pintoch (talk) 14:08, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

If we use it as a qualifier, we cannot state the URL where we could find the thesis nor the year it was done. You can see the problem in Carl Friedrich Gauss (Q6722). Paucabot (talk) 07:28, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

In my opinion, all the atributtes of the thesis must be as a statements in the thesis item. Qualifiers must contain info that is the result of the combination of the item (in this case, the person) and the value of the statement (in this case, the thesis), but not to collect the attributes of the person nor the attributes of the thesis. Broadening the scope to include other thesis

@Pintoch, Samat, Amadalvarez, Paucabot: as previously interested in the subject.

I advocate that we broaden the scope to include Bachleor/Master theses as well. Currently, we don't have a good way to interlink them and it would be good to also be able to store them as well as a qualifier to educated at (P69). ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 01:49, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

 Support also. There are all kinds of thesis, and the names can vary. It's important to be able to use them for diplomas that are not considered "doctoral" but are really important too, depending on the country and specialty. - If an item is created for the diploma work, it's easy to link to the place it can be found, and specify all informations about it. We have a lot of veterinary works from Toulouse's veterinary school on frwikisource.  Support also. Please forgive my non-standard contribution here. I'm not familiar with this process. I started to shape master's thesis (Q1907875) to be similar to doctoral thesis (Q187685), thinking in should be able to add a "master's thesis" to someone's "educated at" qualifiers for their master's degree. I could not do that. I found this discussion and seems you have thought more about this than I have. Have I erred there? Please advise at my talk page or here. Another try to broaden the scope to include other thesis

@ChristianKl, Nomen ad hoc, Hsarrazin, Trilotat, Amadalvarez, Jura1: In light of yet another recent proposal, let’s have another try to broaden the scope of this property to include all kinds of thesis.

I think there has been an overwhelming consensus for quite some time, the only question is: How should we do it?

1. The majority favored renaming P1026, so I think we should do that after a week of discussion or so.
2. How to specify the kind of dissertation. Previous proposals include:
   • using academic degree (P512) (Hsarrazin)
   • object has role (P3831) together with master's thesis (Q1907875) etc. (my thought)
   • no qualifier, all information should be inserted in the item of the thesis (Amadalvarez)
3. How should we handle the existing 7352 cases? I would just add the qualifier via bot or QuickStatements after we’ve agreed on a solution the the qualifier (or a lack thereof).

How to specify: my reasoning is twofold: 1) the type of thesis should be in its P31, to have it as a qualifier of the P1026 is a redundancy; it might be acceptable if it were not for the following reason. 2) the P1026 should be a qualifier of the studies or degrees that someone has completed. The thesis is not a personal feature, but of her/his studies, an important aspect when someone has more than one degree with thesis. Similarly, doctoral advisor (P184) is a property of the thesis, not of the student who is the thesis author.

How handle the existing cases: Looking at this list, over 90% have a P31 that correctly defines what type it is. The rest are incorrect uses that should be corrected in any case. For example: to avoid creating a thesis item and reporting the name in a text-type data (Q12715245#P1026); to indicate the topic of the thesis (Q100695658#P1026), or the university (Q11861442 # P1026) but not its name (via item); some rows indicating book (Q571) or written work (Q47461344) are actually a second value of P31 and can, therefore, be ignored in the analysis. So, I would fix the mistakes and accept the P31 values of thesis item for define the kind of thesis. Beside that, we should consider wheter to move this statements to a qualifier. It's probably a "half-manual" operation, because we must reassign as a qualifier to one academic degree (P512), if exists.

But doesn’t this proposal make a lot of implicit assumptions that aren’t always true in reality? Like:

• Is Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (Q655717)instance of (P31)doctoral thesis (Q187685) really true? The work is hardly a dissertation in any way, it was just accepted as such.
• What about people who worked on their dissertation (and therefore had one or more advisors) but never finished it or indeed did finish it but didn’t complete their doctorate anyway?
• What about cases where the same document was accepted, say, as a dissertation and as a Masters thesis by the same or a different university (yeah, those things happen)?

I also agree that it would be appropriate to use "object has role" as a qualifier to state the type of thesis, even though the thesis item would (or should) have an "instance of" property with the thesis type. Contradiction ?

Hello, I wanted to add a Ph D (thèse académique) to an element Louis Bourguet (Q102302843). I am told by the program to use one of several values to precise this, I chose "thèse de doctorat", which was on the list and the program says "thèse de doctorat" is not authorized (I check it is the same Q number as proposed on the list).
