Native speakers? edit

How do we indicate native vs. non-native speakers? πr2 (tc) 17:14, 3 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Maybe using a qualifier. P518 would work, but would not be ideal. --Jakob (talk) 17:48, 3 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
What would the value for P518 qualifier be? πr2 (t • c) 17:51, 3 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
applies to part (P518) --> native speaker (Q924130) or applies to part (P518) --> NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS --Jakob (talk) 18:20, 3 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Creating a class, something like
⟨ Mrs X. ⟩ instance of (P31)   ⟨ native english speaker ⟩
⟨ q924130 ⟩ subclass of (P279)   ⟨ english speaker ⟩
is also an option. TomT0m (talk) 19:02, 3 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

speakers of a written language? edit

Bokmål (Q25167) has 4,000,000 "speakers"? -- Innocent bystander (talk) 11:39, 9 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

I realise this is a really old question, but yes, speaking is not limited to oral communication. See the third meaning on en:wikt:speak. - Nikki (talk) 09:10, 26 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Add "as qualifier" to property scope constraint edit

It seems there is a valid use case for this property as a qualifier. (e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30#Q30$43354A54-19B2-435C-9D64-F50983CB755A)

Moreover, this property is currently used 319 times as a qualifier on Wikidata (query).

BaubLeBuidler (talk) 16:47, 20 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I've changed it to include qualifiers. - Nikki (talk) 08:56, 26 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

determination method? edit

What are potential "determination method[s]"? Most languages with P1098 don't use this field even though it is required. If the entry is properly sourced, I don't think "determination method" makes sense. A455bcd9 (talk) 09:09, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

OK, based on the example Q67331933 it can be for instance "census" or "estimate". I assume it'll be "estimate" for 99% of figures we have. I therefore suggest we remove this constraint. A455bcd9 (talk) 09:11, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

remove 'single-best-value constraint' edit

Unless I am missing some wikidata subtlety (which is possible), I believe this is typically a property where there should be no 'single-best-value constraint'. Estimating the number of speakers in a language is ofter hard and a bit hazardous, and can vary a lot depending on the retained criterion, and it's not possible to say that one is better than the other (should a person able to repeat some stereotyped sentences be considered a locutor? Most surveys just ask people if they are able to speak, and many people can answer they are while actually they can hardly stand a whole conversation in the language). CaféBuzz (talk) 17:07, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

How many languages contains two or more current values which can be all "the best"? Infovarius (talk) 17:00, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Currently I don't know. But possibly a lot. Considering that there are several thousands of languages spoken in the world, and that a huge majority of them are actually minorized languages in danger of extinction (which means that in many case their speakers are not monolingual and speak a very deteriorated version of the language, which makes the census of actual speaker hard and always a bit subjective). I understand that if the practice here is to maintain this parameter unless it's actually problematic with an important proportion of items it's ok. I am basically concretely refering to is Q14185, where there are at least two scholarly credible estimations very disparate (from ~100 k to ~5k speakers ; I removed the estimation you put in, from russian wikipedia, that gave almost 2 M speaker, which seems really implausible). When I posted this message, I though (erroneously?) that from a maintenance point of view, items that infringe constraints were considered like having a problem to be fixed eventually. If this is not the case and if the quantity of affected items is limited, I understand it can be ok to leave it like this. CaféBuzz (talk) 17:21, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
