Translation of motto edit
By looking the mottos of Montreal (Q340), I don't think we sould add the translation of the motto. Maybe it is best to create a qualifier named translation? --Fralambert (talk) 01:25, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Fralambert: Very good question. I believe some "official" translation is necessary for such monolingual properties. For now, what I did is that I ranked "preferred" the version that appear on its coat of arms, the latin language one. Qualifiers might indeed be better, is there already an existing one that is applicable? LaddΩ chat ;) 21:14, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
- It's mostly that if we add all the translation of a motto, it risk of become eavy. It's why I propose the idea of a "translation" property as a qualifier. The is also city or county with many motto, like Ottawa or the United States.
- Out of subject, the property seem to work fine even on non alphabetical language, like on Nunavut (Q2023)). --Fralambert (talk) 22:26, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

- While the motto has (normally) exactly one language, the translations could be in all supported languages, so wouldn't that be something to be covered with the multilingual text property type? A qualifier named "translation" which then is of the multilingual type would cover it all, but we'd have to wait for that datatype to implement it. Ahoerstemeier (talk) 12:46, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

(I wonder, though, if a multilingual qualifier would allow retrieving a specific translation.) According to Lydia Pintscher, that datatype is still in the plans, but no clear schedule. - I have today added half a dozen exceptions to the single value constraint, and more will come. All swedish military units have (official) mottos in both latin and swedish. I vote for removing the single value constrain from this property. /ℇsquilo 14:15, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Translation of motto (2) edit
- In the meantime there is a qualifier that can be used to add translations. I think we should use this instead of adding non-official translations directly as values. I suggest we update the description accordingly.

- I second the question. Also, what about multi-lingual organizations? They are likely to have more than one "version" of the motto, each of them being official.

tourism slogan edit
per the discussion on the Project Chat - Wikidata:Project_chat#tourism_slogan - I've added "tourism slogan" to the aliases of this property and will add some city/region/country tourism slogans with it. For example "I ❤ NY" (which is also Q1353042, so I'll use motto (P1546) in that case too). In some cases there are 'official' (often in Latin) mottos for places as well as tourism slogans. If you think it's worthwhile we can break the tourism slogans off into a separate property in the future. FYI ArthurPSmith. – Wittylama (talk) 10:06, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
