Description and motivation for this property edit
Competition classes are used in competitive sports to classify sporting events according to the athletes' physical abilities. Significant classification facets depend on the demands of the sport and are typically a compilation of some of the following parameters:
- Gender of participants
- Age of participants
- Sports discipline within a sport, or variants of the sports equipment; in this context, para-sport events are to be considered as separate disciplines within a sport
- Body weight or height of participants (less often)
- Performance or ability levels (not in professional sports)
The definition of official competition classes is typically carried out by international sports governing bodies. Specific sports competition are usually announced by the organizers with a competition class, and the organizer also checks the eligibility of the entered athletes or teams.
Sports records are also usually recognized separately for official competition classes. If sports equipment is part of a competition class, it can also be assigned a competition class.
Other aspects of the accessibility of sports competitions such as a qualification system, invitation-only competitions or membership of certain peer groups (e.g. school and university competitions, military and police sport competitions, …) are generally not part of the definition of a competition class.
Definition of competition class items edit
We define competition class items with the following statements:
- instance of (P31): classification in sports (Q1744559) (or a subclass of (P279) that item at any hierarchy level)
- competition class (P2094): value of a classification facet, qualified with criterion used (P1013) qualifiers for the facet itself (one statement per classification facet)
- sport (P641): assignes the competition class to a type of sport whose international sport governing body defines the competition class
For each sport, all relevant competition class items must be created once. Depending on the sport, some few up to more than 100 items will be required (usually a largely complete permutation of all relevant classification facet values).

The list Wikidata:WikiProject Sports/reports/competition class/distinction criterion main values gives an up-to-date overview of used values of classification facets.

Use of competition class items edit
Competition class items are used in items of one of the types sporting event (Q16510064), sports competition (Q13406554), record (Q1241356), sports equipment (Q768186), or sports organization (Q4438121) (usually sports teams) with the property competition class (P2094). No criterion used (P1013) qualifiers should be added in this case, and there should not be more than one competition class (P2094) statement per item. If different competition classes are evaluated in a single event, a separate item should be created for each competition class.
For items about athletes, the indication of a competition class does not make sense. There is no formal rule that relates an athlete to a competition class; basically, an athlete may enter and participate in an event of a particular competition class, provided they meet the restrictions defined by the class. Items about athletes should therefore not use the competition class (P2094) property; instead, all relevant sporting event participations should be listed with the property participant in (P1344), whose value items should contain a competition class (P2094) statement, or alternatively the property sports discipline competed in (P2416) can be used with a sports discipline item as value.
Queries edit
The property competition class (P2094) is a transitive Wikidata property (Q18647515). This enables us to perform two different types of queries:
- One can search directly for specific competition classes; for example,
?item wdt:P31 wd:Q46190676; wdt:P2094 wd:Q16893403lists all items of the type tennis event (Q46190676) with the competition class women's singles (Q16893403). - Alternatively one can search for a particular classification facet; for example,
?item wdt:P31 wd:Q46190676; wdt:P2094* wd:Q6581072lists all women's events in tennis (singles and doubles events, all age classes). Likewise, different classification facets can of course also be queried in combination.

Updated description to specify “the subject” edit
From the very beginning on this property was proposed to be used on items about “events, teams, participants, equipment” (see Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/34#P2094). Since the description until now led to some confusion who is meant by “the subject”, I added this now (in English and German, please update other languages as well). I also added a corresponding subject type constraint (Q21503250) and (a few days ago) a value-type constraint (Q21510865) to keep this property in good shape via the covi page. —MisterSynergy (talk) 17:02, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
Suggestion: stop using "competition class" in items about humans edit
Right now, the use of competition class (P2094) in items about humans is allowed by the subject type constraint (Q21503250) qualifiers. According to this query, there are more than 50.000 statements of competition class (P2094) in items about humans right now, out of ~190.000 in total.
I suggest that we stop using this property in items about humans, and use sports discipline competed in (P2416) instead. That property should in most affected cases be able to use the very same value as "competition class" currently does.
Reason is that "competition class" is mainly about eligibility classification regarding sporting event participation, and that can change throughout the career of a sportsperson for simple reasons such as athlete aging. sports discipline competed in (P2416) works on a sport discipline level, which seems much better suited here.
After some basic research about P2094 use in other projects, I think there are no obstacles regarding a move from P2094 to P2416 in items about humans. I'll wait a bit for input here, otherwise I'm going to change this some time in the future as proposed. —MisterSynergy (talk) 06:55, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

One refers to competition in sport and the other in the competition classification. - Yes, sports discipline competed in (P2416) and competition class (P2094) are different of course, but the latter does not really fit into items about humans. From my point of view, the current use of competition class (P2094) in human items is wrong and superfluous.
- In general, there are arbitrarily many ways to relate information, and it is a bad idea to actually implement each and every possibility. This might seem tolerable when viewing at an individual single item, but it makes it really difficult to use Wikidata as a knowledge base. Having a particular information encoded in serveral different ways means that usually all of them are incomplete, and writing queries (i.e. using data) is a hell of a pain. A concise approach with a clearly defined set of properties for a given domain (e.g. sportspersons) and a clearly defined range for a given property (such as P2094) is much easier to maintain in good shape on the editorial side, and much easier to query on the data users' side.
- A serious problem in the field of sports is that we have a very lax approach about which properties should be used in which domain. Consider for instance a (male) basketball player and the possibilities:
- sex or gender (P21): male (Q6581097) and occupation (P106): basketball player (Q3665646) are the standard way to express this information
- Redundant information can possibly be found in sport (P641): basketball (Q5372), sports discipline competed in (P2416): basketball (Q5372) or men's basketball (Q46343203), and now also competition class (P2094): men's basketball (Q46343203) (plus potentially "junior men's basketball" and so on).
- None of the statements in the second bullet point adds any useful extra information to the item about a basketball player that is not already there by the sex or gender (P21) + occupation (P106) statements. While some degree of redundancy is probably inevitable, and particularly sport (P641) is heavily used in Wikipedia infoboxes, sports discipline competed in (P2416) is already useful only in some types of sport (which are separated into clear disciplines), and competition class (P2094) does not really make sense at all. At this point, I don't care about the sport (P641) and sports discipline competed in (P2416) redundancy, but since competition class (P2094) is still in quite a good shape, I strongly suggest to make sure that we keep it usable by restricting its domain. - The bulk of the work is pretty much done. There are still some uses related to weight classes and para sports classes that need a solution as they seem not simply removable. I tend to move the claims to the property sports discipline competed in (P2416) which is pretty much made for this purpose. Colleges edit
@MisterSynergy: I'm trying to apply ranking (P1352) to college rankings, as it seems the closest fit. Many rankers split colleges into categories, so I was trying to use this to indicate that as here, but it was throwing up a constraint violation. - I see.
- You cannot add multiple relation (P2309) qualifiers to a value type constraint. You need to select one of these values: instance of (Q21503252), subclass of (Q21514624), or instance or subclass of (Q30208840). The latter is not fully supported, as much as I am aware, and can break some reports.
- I would prefer if we keep instance of (Q21503252) relations only, and add a suitable instance of (P31) value to all potential value items. The additional subclass of (Q21514624) relation would otherwise also apply to all other allowed values, which would make the property definition a lot weaker and thus lead to data degradation.
