Type constraint edit
The type constraint has a lot of violations because almost anything can have a YouTube channel. Should we add all current violations to the list of classes or should we just remove the constraint (which I think is the best solution). Mbch331 (talk) 06:46, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
- The problem is the batshit way Wikidatans want to treat items. Let's take Splatoon which has 4 trailers attached, ideally each should be its own Wikidata item with new subtype video game trailer (a cousin of Q622550). But that creates "too many items", Wikidata is only a simulacrum Wikipedia for language links (before even considering ports). Another issue I've been tackling is type television station only meant for terrestrial, there is no general type for terrestrial, cable, and subscription stations and current the subclassing is wrong. - Whoops, I thought this was YouTube video ID (P1651). Dispenser (talk) 11:37, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
- It should be nouns (Person/Place/Thing) not adjectives or verbs. Not sure how exactly to widen it to that. Dispenser (talk) 03:22, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- That will be a problem. Something isn't defined as a noun, since this isn't a dictionary. You would first have to create a property to state if something is a noun or not, than it needs to be added to all statements that are a noun and then this check could change. Since that's something that's hardly going to work, I suggest to skip that check and just remove this constraint since it isn't working and can't be made to work. Mbch331 (talk) 08:18, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
- I've just removed the constraint as the list is so long now it gives LUA errors. Mbch331 (talk) 06:05, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

- You should probably request a new property for that. Mbch331 (talk) 18:29, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
The Link edit
Hello. The Link connects to "channel" but there is also "user" (example - the correct), is there a solution for this?Thank you ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 08:00, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
- Information that gets stored in this property that isn't a channel should be deleted. We we want to have a Youtube User ID that would need its own proposal. ChristianKl (talk) 10:40, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for replying.Since they are doing the same and instead of Re-suggestion the same proposal with a new link, Is it possible to create the new property directly based on the original proposal?Thank you ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 13:23, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
- No this isn't possible. The outcome of the original proposal is this property. A new property needs a new discussion, since it's based on a different outcome. Mbch331 (talk) 05:01, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- @ChristianKl: Any incorrect data will either be corrected to a channel id automatically twice a day (by my bot) or if not possible the information will be deleted. Mbch331 (talk) 05:03, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- @ChristianKl: As I said, the property is the same (not) but with a new link, what's the problem?
- This property was not created for storing any information information about Youtube usernames and thus you actually need to ask for a property that stores Youtube usernames. ChristianKl (talk) 13:05, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- @ChristianKl: In YouTube, there is no difference between users and channels: the two are the same (details 1 2).Based on this, please create a new property as another copy of the original.Thank you ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 16:41, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- If there would be a 1-on-1 mapping between both there's an argument that there's no need to store user data in a separate property and not an argument that an additional argument can be created without a proposal. In addition your link doesn't show that every user has a channel. ChristianKl (talk) 16:45, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Tool to get channel ID from a username edit
I found a tool that can take a YouTube username and (though some API calls) give you back the channel ID.
https://johnnythetank.github.io/youtube-channel-name-converter/ – The preceding unsigned comment was added by William Graham (talk • contribs) at 3 feb 2018 22:28 (UTC).
- You can use that tool, or just enter the username and have my bot do the work for you. Mbch331 (talk) 22:36, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
- I've just tested a similar tool[1] for Q234750 (from user SUZIQUATROOFFICIAL to channel UCutQebYflgcV6kCiNKKtbxg), because I didn't know your support bot. All those "possible vandalism" tags tend to make me nervous, but presumably the YT user URL is unsuited as a referenve URL for the corresponding channel ID. OTOH I dislike statements without any reference at all. –84.46.52.175 05:36, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
The link above no longer works, but there are other sites that will convert a user URL into a channel URL: https://commentpicker.com/youtube-channel-id.php. Another very simple way to get the channel ID: At any channel page with "user" URL click a video of the channel (in its "VIDEOS" tab) and click the channel name on the video. Then you can get to the page with its "channel" URL. (I found this helpful info at https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14366648/how-can-i-get-a-channel-id-from-youtube/18665812#18665812)
Single value constraint edit
I think this property should not have single-value constraint (Q19474404). Many items, including artists, companies, etc, have more than a YouTube channel. Take a look at the exception to constraint (P2303) property list to see the considerable amount of items exempted for this. Esteban16 (talk) 00:42, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

- Alternatively, create a separate item for each YouTube channel (see, for example, the distinction between Natalie Wynn (Q42429948) and ContraPoints (Q55639474)). --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 09:44, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- Agree with Esteban16 to remove single-value constraint (Q19474404). Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 13:32, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

Verification edit
I've left a note on project chat (Wikidata:Project chat#Indicating verified accounts) on how best to indicate verified accounts across the different social media properties - comments welcome there. Andrew Gray (talk) 23:32, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

"Mandatory" qualifiers edit
The "mandatory" qualifiers don't actually seem that mandatory — why is start time/number of subscribers required? Sdkb (talk) 09:13, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Trade: - You added the constraints. Can you explain? Mbch331 (talk)
- All Youatube channels lists their start time and number of subscribers so i thought it would be quite fitting for this identifier. Also pretty helpful for people not familiar with WD.--Trade (talk) 10:20, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- My understanding is that qualifiers should only be mandatory if leaving them out would create problems, though. These seem at best like things we would suggest rather than demand. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 06:22, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
- I don't see the need for them being mandatory either. Mbch331 (talk) 08:26, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

P1932, not P1810, for channel's title edit
In my view, the title of the Youtube channel should be provided with qualifier P1932 (English label was clarified from "stated as" to "object stated as" at 13:24, 31 May 2022), not P1810 (English label was clarified from "named as" to "subject named as" at 13:23, 31 May 2022), because the title is the name of the semantic triple's object (Youtube channel), not subject (Youtube channel's owner). I have accordingly revised the Wikidata usage instructions (added at 18:28, 22 January 2022), and added P1932 to allowed qualifiers constraint. --Neo-Jay (talk) 16:02, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
Incoming YouTube handles edit
So Google has been rolling out YouTube handles the past few weeks, and they intend to assign every channel a handle by 14 Nov 2022.
Wonder how this should be treated: a website username or ID (P554) qualifier on this YouTube channel property? Or a totally new property to propose? Btcprox (talk) 14:57, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- I would say new property. Username is already used for https://youtube.com/<username> and https://youtube.com/user/<username>. Mbch331 (talk) 15:18, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
