Discussion edit

P2600 geni.com profile ID - Wikidata does store ID plus irrelevant URL part edit

The geni.com ID is purely numeric. The part before the "/" which is stored in Property:P2600 is only for search engine optimization, is not part of the ID and can be changed by any editor of a profile without effect on the ability to find the profile. Also, the internal link if one browses the tree view goes to a base URL plus a numeric ID. Compare:

Desc. Value to be stored in P2600 URL
CURRENT Elizabeth-II-Queen-of-the-United-Kingdom/6000000003075071669 https://www.geni.com/people/Elizabeth-II-Queen-of-the-United-Kingdom/6000000003075071669
TEST https://www.geni.com/people/Elizabeth-II-Queen-of-the-UK/6000000003075071669
TEST https://www.geni.com/people/whatever/6000000003075071669
INTERNAL 6000000003075071669 https://www.geni.com/profile/index/6000000003075071669

That Wikidata allows storing of the ID plus some URL parts means that duplicate usage of IDs on different WD-items cannot be detected with the standard tools. For this it would be necessary for WD to only store the ID itself.

The property is called "geni.com profile ID" also the API documentation talks of "profile" [1]. Wikidata could store only the ID and link to https://www.geni.com/profile/index/<ID>.

There is also a representation isssue, e.g. Reasonator currently fails to display the complete P2600 value [2]. 92.231.172.31 14:51, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

This is not an uncommon issue for our ID's; how to handle it should probably be discussed on the talk page of the property. Also, if there doesn't seem to be any objections to the change to a numeric format, a bot request should be made to switch them, and any necessary formatter URL change made when the bot has run. Pinging those involved with original proposal - @Chuq, Richard_Arthur_Norton_(1958-_), Pigsonthewing, Edgars2007, Micru: - any comments on switching to numeric format? ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:01, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the ping. https://www.geni.com/profile/index/6000000003075071669 clearly works, but are we sure that https://www.geni.com/profile/index/$1 is the canonical formatter URL? Happy for the change to be made, anyway, as we can always update the formatter URL later. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:29, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Nice find! Yes, I always worried that if you modified the person's name the link would change, and of course when you take out the name WITHOUT adding in "index" it just takes you to your home page, if you are registered. Again, nice find! --RAN (talk) 22:48, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Looks fine. I can do the conversion. --Edgars2007 (talk) 05:39, 13 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Edgars2007, 24h have passed since your statement and since the repeated confirmation of the canonical form. How long will it take you? 77.179.94.217 17:17, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Re the canonical form, User:Pigsonthewing, if one goes to the tree view, html, then there are links to the profiles in the form presented above. 77.14.76.242 18:13, 13 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
