Clarifying the meaning and use of this property on instance of (P31)written work (Q47461344)

I recently proposed a new property Goodreads work ID. This seems to have caused some confusion that will have to be cleared up before that property can be created.

This property is a unique identifier for ?editioninstance of (P31)version, edition or translation (Q3331189). It is expected that each item identified by this property should have exactly one ISBN-13 associated with it. For example:

• Goodreads version/edition ID (P2969)18241 War and Peace (Hardcover). Published January 19th 2006 by Viking Adult. ISBN13: 9780670034697
• Goodreads version/edition ID (P2969)290979 War and Peace (Hardcover). Published October 16th 2007 by Knopf. ISBN13: 9780307266934
• Goodreads version/edition ID (P2969)5107 The Catcher in the Rye (Paperback). Published January 30th 2001 by Back Bay Books. (ISBN13: 9780316769174)
• Goodreads version/edition ID (P2969)7178 The Catcher in the Rye (Paperback). Published May 1991 by Little, Brown. (ISBN13: 9780316769488)

These identifiers do not, however, uniquely identify ?workinstance of (P31)written work (Q47461344). One option to clarify this may be to change Goodreads version/edition ID (P2969)property constraint (P2302)subject type constraint (Q21503250)class (P2308){{{5}}} to not allow it to be used on version, edition or translation (Q3331189), however, there are possibly legitimate uses of this property on written work (Q47461344). It may be useful to allow use of this edition level item on work level item if no edition level items exist or will be created for the work, as is allowed for ISBN-13 (P212) and OCLC control number (P243).

Currently however there are multiple constraint violations, and in fact the example is a constraint violation. This property has a constraint Goodreads version/edition ID (P2969)property constraint (P2302)single-value constraint (Q19474404) but the example, which is a work, has three values associated with it.

I think we should try to clarify the legitimate and intended uses of this property are. ISBN-13 (P212) and OCLC control number (P243) could be useful models for this. ISBN-13 (P212) has property constraint (P2302)single-value constraint (Q19474404) but it has a separator (P4155) qualifier on this constraint. OCLC control number (P243) does not have a single-value constraint (Q19474404) constraint. I think the ISBN-13 (P212) approach is best.

I propose the following changes:

• Update the property documentation (the template on this talk page) to clarify that the domain of this property is written work (Q47461344).
• Add separators to this property's single value constraint (Goodreads version/edition ID (P2969)property constraint (P2302)single-value constraint (Q19474404)separator (P4155)...): language of work or name (P407) applies to part (P518) volume (P478) publisher (P123) distribution format (P437) publication date (P577)
• Add Goodreads version/edition ID (P2969)Wikidata usage instructions (P2559)This property uniquely identifies an edition of a written work. If a Q-item exists for the edition identified by this identifier then the identifier belongs on that item. If there is no Q-item for the edition identified by this item, but there is a Q-item for the written work the edition is of, then this property may be used on the written work Q-item provided it is qualified with one of the separators of the single value constraint.
• Add examples where this is used on Q-items representing written works and Q-items representing editions of written works.

•  Comment In the case where a version or edition does not have its own wikidata item, the best practice should be to create the edition item using the ISBN and Goodreads Book ID as identifiers. An unmatched Goodreads book ID ought to be a way to find missing editions and add them to Wikidata. I would oppose recommending adding the Goodreads book ID to the work-level item. - PKM (talk) 18:52, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
•  Weak oppose I tend to agree with PKM, the edition level items should be made. However, I do understand this can be cumbersome and so I think there's not much harm in adding these as statements to the work level item and just letting the constraint violations happen.
