IDs broken? edit

@Pigsonthewing, יונה בנדלאק, Hector Bottai, Thierry Caro:

Père Igor is warning us that the links for this property (and the identifiers themselves?). I had a quick look and indeed something seems wrong somewhere. Could you have a look please?

Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 13:10, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

The example on the property page worked for me, just now. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:42, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
The fact is that Internet Bird Collection has been sold some recent time ago to eBird, and this property is now redirecting to the corresponding eBird page. My opinion is its use should be suspended and the property deleted everywhere the same eBird page is showing.--Hector Bottai (talk) 02:19, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Père Igor mentioned Q25385 as a page for which the link is not correctly redirected, and I also found Q26490 I don't know why these two species, but I checked some others, and the redirection works well. I agree with Hector Bottai that the pages with the broken links should be deleted.
Also, if I get it right, the property page claims that those identifiers are affirmed in the series Handbook of the Birds of the Worlds but it doesn't seem to be the case, at least I did not find the identifiers in the book series. They were probably only used in the hbw.com site. Kaisse (talk) 11:38, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
You are right, the Internet Bird Collection belonged to HBW, but no longer. It was fully integrated into eBird. In my opinion there is no sense in maintaining this Property whereas the link to e Bird is established. Hector Bottai (talk) 14:10, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
The property work for me, if it is not working on some items we can try to fix it. It will be good if someone can run a global check to see how much link are broken and how much work. for Common Kestrel (Q26490), for example i found the correct link (need to change to "eurkes"), I didn't change it yet to have an example of broken items for this discussion.
I looked the pages on birdsoftheworld and on ebird is not the same. but maybe they change the identifiers to be the same? if yes, maybe a bot can fix this. but I looked on 2 example so I am not sure about my theory. - yona b (talk) 10:31, 22 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
It's a bit more problematic than changing a few broken items. The IBC identifiers are no longer used: there is just a redirection from the ancient species pages of the IBC (that used the Internet Bird Collection species ID (P3099) identifiers) to the new species pages of birdsoftheworld. For some reason, some of this redirections do not work anymore, and it does not seem plausible that any effort will be made to resolve that. The string "eurkes" is not the ancient IBC/HBW identifier of the kestrel, it's a new string to uniquely identify the page of the eurasian kestrel in birdsoftheworld. And if you change the value of the property Internet Bird Collection species ID (P3099) on Common Kestrel (Q26490) with "eurkes", it will link to the url https://www.hbw.com/ibc/species/eurkes which won't work because it wasn't a valid page in the first place. So those broken links cannot be restored.
So I agree with Hector Bottai that the property should be deleted on those problematic cases. The questions that remain are:
  • Should we eventually delete the property itself (seems logical for me, but there is no rush as long as the redirection to the birdsoftheworld pages works)
  • Should we create a new property for birdsoftheworld ? It seems a good idea, but I would be more in favor of a "Birds of the World page" property than a "Birds of the World identifier" as we have no idea whether the strings like "eurkes" in the URLs are designed to be persistent identifiers

@Pigsonthewing, יונה בנדלאק, Thierry Caro, Kaisse, VIGNERON: "Birds of the World" is a page for certain species (with a lot of information) while "eBird" is the midia gallery for the same species, both pertaining to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Creating an identifier or a page for "Birds of the World" is a good idea, but there is a problem, it opens only for suscribers, while "eBird" is fully open. So, I do not support creating it.--Hector Bottai (talk) 11:30, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I found another identifier that is the same case, the Property:P6047 Neotropical Birds Online is also fully incorporated into "Birds of the World" and correctly redirects to this "only for suscribers" page, at least a few cases I tested, example: Saltator atriceps (Q516831) what to do?--Hector Bottai (talk) 11:30, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
