    Discussion edit

    What is the point? edit

When you want to indicate that a category includes people who studied at an institution, you can use "is a list of" "people" with qualifier "educated at" "whatever institution". It has been a best practice for years and is supported by Reasonator. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 07:40, 13 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

@GerardM: The idea is that if someone has statement with educated at (P69) that points to some institution and that institution has statement with category for alumni of educational institution (P3876), we can automatically place article about that person into corresponding alumni category (implemented in ru-wiki). I can see that you proposal is more generic, but I'm not sure I understand it. Can you please give me an example of similair statements? --Ghuron (talk) 15:59, 21 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Check Q7006056 and its Reasonator page all doing exactly what you say you need. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 06:15, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@GerardM: I agree that in ideal world, I can query in lua "give me category with P971:Q508719 and P971, that points to the person "alma-mater". The problem is that there is no such API in lua (see my comment on phab:T185313 from Apr 18). Reasonator can use SPARQL end-point, but we cannot do this for infobox generation due to performance reasons. --Ghuron (talk) 04:31, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Ghuron: In an ideal world you would not use Wikidata to query what a category contains in order to query the category for its content.. Particularly when that same information is already in Wikidata. It makes more sense to set up regular updates to Wikidata for content from categories. It makes more sense as well because the categories often do not contain the information available in Wikidata. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 05:09, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@GerardM: Let me describe what I am trying to achieve. Let's take a random bio-article: en:Richard S. Arnold. Right now this article does not seems to be using wikidata, but technically there are no problems to populate "alma maters" field in infobox from Q7328805. But besides infobox, there are 3 categories there as well: en:Category:Harvard Law School alumni, en:Category:Phillips Exeter Academy alumni, en:Category:Yale University alumni. Again, with a few lines of lua code, I can automatically place article in those categories by requesting P3876 statements from Q1426464, Q49112 and Q49112. In fact we are doing that in ru-wiki for months. Ideally I should not use P3876 but instead request those categories as reasonator did in example above. The same applies for P971:Q3406134, P971:Q1322263, P971:Q19660746, etc.
What you are trying to describe is something much more ambitious. I guess we need to get there step by step --Ghuron (talk) 05:35, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
